I think the dummy should fight back. There should also be different 'kinds' of enemies that use the techniques you see 'in the wild'. So you can adapt your strategy and check what works best agains what kinds of enemies.

No, no, no. If you want practice against kinds of enemies, you practice on those enemies. The point of the dummy is primarily number-crunching. Increase certain stats and see how they effect your offensive ability.

That being said, if the player had control over whether or not the dummy attacked it I can see it being useful in testing defensive ability. No need for making them simulate actual enemies though - the enemies themselves do that just fine.

    +1 for this idea.

I'm a healer, so I don't nuke much endgame, but one thing that has always held true of Final Fantasies is the presence of elemental weaknesses and strengths. It would be hard to determine how you would do on a 'real' mob because the dummy would be completely neutral. I also remember each mob in FFXI being weak to different types of damage... slashing, piercing, and blunt. Again, I'm a healer, so I do not know if this is present in FFXIV endgame content.

I think the idea of a dummy is fun, and people would definitely benefit from it, but I do not believe it would be as effective as in a game like WoW where elemental and damage type weaknesses don't play AS BIG of a role.
