People advancing dysynth skills into the higher levels (where the items involved start getting fairly expensive or rare) might use a lot of "junk" materia, since each materia melded to an item increases the chance of successfully desynthing that item by 5%.
As with spiritbonding, there's no real need for it to be "junk" materia. That's just what it ends up being because people are looking for whichever is cheapest. But these are reasons why it's good for there to be a range of different values, so that there is some that's cheap enough.
Deshynth is no excuse to leave tons of trash material in the game.
They should simply remove them or do dual stats material, instead of giving 40 crit you'd get 20crit 20 haste for instance.
