Reducing my level

I failed to buy HW before it was bundled into SB, so there's no stopping til I hit 70 now.

Only bright side is getting SAM and RDM so I can keep all the jobs balanced and geared together.

Not having access to SAM or RDM is definitely a downside to keeping my exp capped, but I still haven't even unlocked the HW jobs! I came into the game with the 3.1 patch so ARR and HW were bundled. Because I wanted to experience as much of ARR as possible before going into HW, I was around level 54-55 when I finally entered Ishgard and that was after relentlessly trying to avoid exp. I never did roulettes, weeklies, FATEs, and the like unless something I was specifically after made me do it. I tried to keep up my skills by spam running trials, which gave no exp

Another downside is not really being able to participate in the most relevant threads that have to do with SB, levels 61+ and the abilities that come with it, but the debates and such are always interesting to read into.

Yes, perhaps a bit too bad-cop. Should you or the OP stop playing? My point is you really have to decide that yourselves - I'm just pointing to the futility of playing a game you know runs counter to what you like and enjoy.

Personally, anyone who has any type of problem, and comes on here asking for advice or just generally querying something as the OP did, shouldn’t be faced with ridicule or told that their decision to play a game is futile. They should be supported and offered encouragement. For me, if I’d decided to let my social interactions dictate what I do, I would never have gained the little confidence I do have when it comes to interacting in a social environment. It’s thanks to online gaming and the support of the friends I’ve made through said gaming - I turned what you called futile into something positive - as I’m sure the OP can do with the support of the community and their friends...

One more question - if I start a new character, and choose GLA as the starting job, buy a potion to level DRK to 60 and another potion to complete quest up to start of SB, will my character screen show me as a level 1 GLA? I am quite pedantic about this sort of thing. I want this char to be a career DRK.

Yes I believe it will show GLA as level 1 as you can't choose DRK as a starter job when creating your character.

For reasons different from OP, I'd enjoy something to prevent experience gains, if only so I could stall at 60 to experience some of the end-HW content without over-leveling pre-SB.

Every notable fight/dungeon level caps you anyway. You are literally not allowed to overlevel it.

They mean halt all experience gain until reaching expansion areas, i.e., remaining level 60 through the remainder of 3.0 and 3.x content, and only starting to level again once they transition into 4.0 content. Almost as if they don’t have the expansion registered to the account, so the game halts all leveling progress until it is.

Why would you want to halt exp gain though? It doesn't hurt you to have extra and in fact most people suggest you to buy SB once you hit 60 so that you can start accumulating exp. I started a new character and purchased the ARR story skip (but not HW) and the insta-60 skip. Even though literally all exp from HW went to post 60 leveling, I still wasn't to 70 until almost the end of SB and it prevents you from having to do side quests just to keep the main story going.

oh well, guess i will level a gladiator then. Can I level a gladiator to level 70? Or classes can level up to level 50?

I know what they mean. I'm saying that it's pointless to worry about being "overleveled" in this game because this game level caps you for pretty much every solo duty and dungeon. Even if you wanted to do FATEs or something, you get capped for those too.
