Server selection?

Hi there. I tried FF14 a couple times in the past but didn't stick with it. Giving it another go. I have a character on Balmung but have read that the server is very congested.

Since I haven't played in more than a year I am thinking about starting a new character on a different server.

I'm looking for a recommendation.

I'm thinking about playing a gladiator and am looking for a server that isn't dead but not over populated with a friendly community. I read Mateus might be good because although I'm not an active rper, I do enjoy the rp vibe. Also I would add that I am close to 50 irl so a server with a healthy older population would be great also.

Bottom line is friendly with a nice population is most important though. Newbie friendly would be nice also. Not looking for gold handouts or anything, just patience I guess.

PS I notice some servers have a star next to them...does that mean they are more new character friendly?

You might want to consider leveraging the World Rebalancing Initiative which allowed free transfers from Congested Servers to Prefered servers.
Balmung and Gilgamesh are the congested servers in the Aether data center.

The most recent list of preferred servers I could find.

Jenova
Brynhildr
Famfrit
Malboro

Of these, I see people from Jenova the most in cross world duty finders. So, that might be a good indicator of a lower population with high activity.

A friend of mine is trying to make a character in Shiva with trial account but it doesn't let him to do so.With the above list it should be ok since Shiva is in standard and not congested status.Any help would be glad taken.

Before Gilgamesh was locked, there was a tactic players would use to create new characters on it. There is threshold for active players on the server in which the server will reject the creation of new characters.
So, to get around this, players can slip past this threshold by attempting to create the characters during low play time windows. E.g. 5:30am EST on a Thursday, or immediately after maintenance before people log back on.
