Many mmos have a workaround when this happens, FFXIV surely needs a lot of QoL improvements.

While I don't especially disagree with the idea, it seems like a very labour intensive solution to what shouldn't be a problem (the team are very sensitive to exploits such as duplication bugs and mailing could introduce a bunch of behaviours which will make testing exhaustively quite slow work). What I'd prefer, substantially, is a way for unclaimed items or items you cannot hold to give you a short grace period to clear a space before they drop to the floor and end up wasted. The same functionality could also help in the case of everyone passing on an item out of politeness only to find it has been destroyed because the person they expected to greed it didn't want it (or couldn't roll). XIV's treasure pool is very strict sometimes.

LOTRO has a nice feature for this, a "Pending Loot" bag which is just inventory overflow space where any excess items you get as loot drops can land. You've then got an hour in which to take them out. (When that hour expires they disappear if you haven't removed them by then.) That gives enough time to finish a run, get back to town, and sort out your stuff to make space for the new drops.

I wish they'd put something like that in this game.

Any materia under tier 4 should also be gone as you wont be using them anyways because of gear caps. So either start selling the stuff on retainers or vendor if you so choose. There are plenty of ways. Also considering you have ZERO crafters at 70 tells me you are hoarding mats that you don't need. It really IS that simple.
What is this even trying to say LOL , your point being what exactly if it "is" really that "simple" you really wouldn't need 6 retainers. Totally there's a lot of room guy with 2 retainers you just gotta get good and buy 4 more is what your saying

How do you not understand the post? It was pretty simple to read. The amount of retainers I have is irrelevant to the actual post. The person is moaning about inventory issues and doesnt even have gatherers and crafters at max level. It means he is hoarding mats. Also I love how you left out the rest of my post which IS relevant

If you are leveling crafting and gathering then you need to be efficient. Go out gather some mats for the crafter you are leveling, come back and craft what you gathered, and then sell it.

You need to plot your path to 70 on both, do a little research and see what you can craft to get to 70. Me personally, I look for the lowest material count item (lumber, leather, thread, Ingots, Nuggets, food components) then I use those items to craft other items, also with low material counts. Once im done I sell the stuff. It really IS that simple.
There, i posted what you left out. You know, ALL the relevant stuff that pertains to the OP's problem. Don't half quote me just to make your post look good.

Correction: I have MIN at max level, and am actively levelling (and using) the other DoL/H, as well as desynth, don't discount inventory issues based on levels.

What MiraKershaw is trying to point out is that you say that inventory bloat is something that only happens to lazy people with poor space management, yet you actively pay to have 4x as much retainer space as me, I don't think you pay for that just to have different retainer glamours.

I will hold my hands up and say that maybe I can do more to manage my inventory, sure I can throw out some glamour items, maybe throw away some crafting mats that I saved for later, but ultimately why should I be required to? This QoL change is nothing but good (in concept, the mail thing has some iffy execution), and means that I'm not constantly under pressure to keep my inventory empty. I have had days where I spent the day crafting (especially on CUL), and the 20 free spaces I had I didn't notice were full, it happens to everyone, and it shouldn't need to be a problem.

I pay for 6 retainers because I want too and have OCD issues. None of my retainers are even half full. I have them because I sort them by crafter (arm/bsm, ltw, wvr, alc/cul, crp, and gsm) I never said you were lazy, I said that you are hoarding items. There is a pretty big difference. ANY mmo, since the beginning of time of MMO's (and I have played them starting with UO) has inventory issues as far as a hoarder is concerned. Trust me, I used to be just like you, I had 2 retainers FULL OF GLAMOUR..yea, just glamour lol. When 4.0 hit i said enough is enough.

Why can't I discount inventory issues based on level? I've been there, I know what leveling to 50 and then to 60 and then to 70 is like and just like i said in my original post. You are doing it inefficiently.

As far as leveling your crafting it really is as simple as I said. Obviously there are a couple inside questions you need to ask yourself. Are you leveling DoH/DoL for personal? Monetary? Both? Most people its both in which I say, know your market. Find what you want to partake it and thats what you hoard. The rest is bloat as far as your needs are concerned.

Me for example, the market where my main is (this is an alt account) Is great on consumables (food/pots) and the odd food item that is a pita to get. So that is what I play to.

The bottom line is simple, you need to let go of nonsensical stuff. Old items from level 50 and below have very little worth compaired to items 60+ and all this stuff you are hoarding is why your retainers and inventory are full.

Now, I am not by any means saying that the inventory system in final fantasy is great. It's not, and we SHOULD be given more than 2 retainers (base retainers should be at LEAST 3, hell maybe even 4) with all things considering. I dont think it would change much for you though (or anyone like us), because a hoarder is still a hoarder. You will magically find a way to run out of space again (been there too lol)

You need to go through your retainers and get rid of all the stuff from 50 and below and just sell it on mb, vendor, or trash it. only hold on to the rare glamour piece that is hard to get (which shouldnt be much tbh)

Because it's a terrible idea, you can hold a max count of 25 iirc (im not in game to check) in your mailbox. For someone that cant manage their own inventory when you are LOOKING AT IT ALL DAY. Do you really think this is going to fix their problem? Newp it wont. How do you NOT know when your own inventory is full? there is this UI piece that has all these colored dots showing what space is left...

Look, I'm tired of inventory issues too. i'm tired of having to hold on to ANY glamour items whatsoever. (where is my glamour catalog) And i'm tired of them using "server strain, server load time, server insertrandomfirstserverproblemhere" as an excuse. They definitely need to step it up. But suggesting a terrible idea is still...... guess what? .... a terrible idea.

Who are you to say how I play the game though? I do still use items from level 50-60, whether it be for levelling desynth, or unlocking new masterbooks, but that is massively irrelevant to the discussion. What I have to say to your rampant commenting on my playstyle (I hate using that, but when it comes to how I manage my inventory, I can play how I like, this isn't group content) is so what? It has no bearing on whether this feature should be implemented, and like I said before, it brings nothing but good (and i'll reiterate, in concept - I don't like the mail thing).

We are finally on the same page, can we please get back on topic now since we are in agreement?

I've played other games where you have an "overflow" slot that items will go into when they won't fit into your inventory. Once you clear out room, you can add them one at at time. It would be nice to see something like that here.

The solution is to stop hoarding mats. Because no amount of inventory space is going to be enough for those with poor inventory management skills.
