Is Miasma II more useful than it seems?

So I've been grinding the end dungeons and I noticed something. Miasma II actually seems to do pretty good damage in crowds. I know its technically a dot but that 100 potency seems to be doing pretty well for big pulls.

Has anyone else noticed this or tested this?

100 potency, and then that extra damage per tick.
If you can afford your MP to stay consistent with keeping it up, the damage you deal together with your other DoTs is amazing and really helps with killing mobs faster.

More useful then it seems? No. It's exactly useful as it seems, which is a lot.

SCH's dungeon DPS was an absolute pale imitation of what it used to be before Miasma II got put back in. It was pretty clearly demonstrated in another thread that with it, SCH dungeon DPS is reasonably competitive again thankfully. Personally I still think it's a bit of a bandaid fix for an indirect nerf, but eh =(

In total Miasma II deals 200 potency (upfront + DoTs) which is the same potency as Holy and Gravity without the damage cut from hitting multiple mobs (takes longer to do full 200 potency).

Echoing what Pence said, it's exactly what it seems.

Pre Broil 2 it's worth it for ST too, as it's higher potency than Broil 1 for a GCD action.

ok. what would you say is the optimal way to use it then? should I treat it like a regular dot and wait till it times out or spam it for its initial damage?

It depends on how fast the mobs are being AoE'd down, how worried are you about the tank, how much downtime before the next big pull and of course your MP.

Lets say you have 2 DPS that aren't being single targetting lemons, probably not spam it, but maybe just clip the DoT timer at maybe <10s. But when the pack is taking a while to die, it's best for you to let the DoT times out before refreshing as prolonged big pull tanking means tanks will run out of cooldowns and you will have to start casting more heals, you'll need more MP for that and spamming Miasma II is a surefire way to run out of MP.

    Potencies by action:
    Ruin - 100
    Miasma - 300
    Bio II - 350
Miasma II - 200 per target (100 per target when spammed)
    Broil - 190
    Broil II - 230

Highest DPS uses at different levels (assuming you have the MP or cooldowns for each scenario):

Lv46: Access to Ruin, Bio II, Miasma, Miasma II
Miasma II outdamages Ruin and Ruin II even on single targets. Depending on when the server ticks happen, some casts of Miasma II will be 25ish potency more than Ruin/II even when spamming it, however you will run out of MP fast and it's not worth it. On two targets, Miasma II spam is at least twice as much damage as Ruin Spam.

1 target: Bio II [350], Miasma [300], Miasma II [200], spam Ruin [100]
2+ targets: Bio II [350], Miasma [300], spam Miasma II [200] (Bane after first one [520++])

Lv54: Access to Broil, Bio II, Miasma, Miasma II
Miasma II with full duration outdamages Broil even on single targets, but not when spammed. Miasma II on two targets outdamages Broil by 10+ potency (spell speed dependent). If your MP and cooldowns are in a good place, you can spam it. Miasma II is significantly better than Broil spam on three or more targets.

1 target: Bio II [350], Miasma [300], Miasma II [200], spam Broil [190]
2 targets: Bio II [350], Miasma [300], Miasma II [400] (Bane [520]), spam Broil [190]
or 2 targets: Bio II [350], Miasma [300], spam Miasma II [200] (Bane [520])
3+ targets: Bio II [350], Miasma [300], spam Miasma II [300++] (Bane [910++])

Lv64: Access to Broil II, Bio II, Miasma, Miasma II
Miasma II does less damage to a single target than Broil II even with full duration. On two targets, it outdamages Broil II with full duration, but not spammed.

1 target: Bio II [350], Miasma [300], spam Broil II [230]
2 targets: Bio II [350], Miasma [300], Miasma II [400] (Bane [520]), spam Broil II [230]
3+ targets: Bio II [350], Miasma [300], spam Miasma II [300++] (Bane [910++]).

In cases where you're not spamming Miasma II, refresh it as necessary. Bane doesn't spread Miasma II but it's weavable there.

Even on lvl 70, miasma II still is useful on single target when you are going to get bumped but don't have the time for a last cast. It's better than using Ruin II (like for O1/O1s O2S for example)
It's also nice to weave energy drain, rouse, chain stratagem or any other oGCD.
It's also interesting to put that dot on the boss if you will spend the next 2 GCD using some heals.

However and OF COURSE, always watching if your mana allow you to do that Miasma II on ST.
