Oh hey, looking at it, you're not wrong. I'm going to have to go pick that one up. Thanks for the tip!

I loved the pet in wyvern in XI, and would love to see it return. But the AI would be a big issue, maybe they could make it unable to take damage.
But im not holding my breathe on a pet, i think a rare unlockable wyvern companion/mount combo that only drg can get would be a awesome. And you can name it and change its colour.

Ricard from FFII (also known as the first Dragoon in the series) was also what they took the wyvern/dragoon bond inspiration for FFXI from. This happens between the last dragoon, Ricard Highwind, and the last wyvern after it hatches. The wyvern also acts as a key item that casts Blaze 7 in battle.
This is the ONLY time it's ever occurred outside FFXI. While the 60-70 quests in XIV might be considered an homage, I doubt it'll be taken further, and another game will have to revisit that tribute in the future.

I thought the dragoon wyvern was a 2 hour CD? even then, i dont remember it being anymore useful than looking cool... seemed like the breath attack would only proc infrequently. i went DRK/SAM and never looked back.

That was back when it was old school... Personally I loved having a wyvern and only died really do to poor use of skills or mayor battles of wide aoe constant damage. Other wise I use to love doing DRG / SAM . I would love to see DRG getting a companion at least for outside and normal dungeons.

It was the 2 hour ability ages ago, but it stayed until you or it died. It got changed from the 2 hour CD to a 20 minute one after SE figured out how important it was as well as how fragile it was, the 2 hour CD becoming Spirit Surge.

The breath attacks for offensive wyverns would happen every time you used a WS, and later on they gave DRGs the ability to force the wyverns to use their breaths by other abilities entirely. These days, they breath quite often, as gear haste is capped easily and you can stack a lot of multi-hit and store TP. so DRGs typically get enough TP to use a WS every 4-7 auto attack rounds, depending on how much RNG favored them.

As for how useful they were, they were quite useful. The wyvern's healing breath is how many DRGs solo'd when they couldn't find a party. Like, it wasn't possible without it. Admittedly, I'm unsure what the relative strength of the damage breaths were/are, so I won't claim the offensive elemental breaths are great, but that healing one was awesome.

I had once entertained the idea that Blood of the Dragon would grant you an extra auto-attack to kind of mimic the idea of this Wyvern that everyone seems so hung up on, but actually having one would go against the lore of the job established in universe.
