I'm sorry but i have to disagree, Do you remember you are playing with the other 7 people? does taking at your own pace means you have to keep sucking when you can clearly improves better but choose not to? You taking at your own pace is a hindrance for another 7 people you play with.

You know what happened when you are a hindrance? nobody invites you to stuff and then you will ends up whining that this game doesn't have anyone to do stuff with.

This isn't offline game and shouldn't be treated as one, you are playing with another person, and you should take that into your consideration. Feel free to find the people that have the same way of playing as you, but you have no right to whines when you can't find the exact same people that approves the way you take this game.
It's all rights to disagree. Tis' only my opinion on the subject matter.

Even in MMO land, I don't expect anyone to be this veteran that knows how to tank, crowd control, or heal. Or to know most of the terminology. To delve through guides and forums on how to play their class(es), watch a video of an encounter using classes they don't play, or to even keep abreast with patch notes, dev responses, and translations. I do have my expectations of a player, these aren't them.

People that want to win, fast, efficiently, be first, and optimize will find like-minded individuals and stick with 'em. People that take it at their own pace, will similarly find folks in these situations.

Someone who is willing to grow, to adapt, they're trying to get better. They may not pull out all the stops to be the best, but they're giving it an effort to improve.

If seven people used to winning decide to recruit a straggler and lose, they have the option of bringing the straggler up to speed so that they can all win, like true sports. Or they can be poor sports and terminate the straggler after a failed run or two. In the latter case, this sounds like one type of elitist that the OP is talking about.

It's one thing to take the game seriously some of the time, put your game face on, do what it takes to win (videos, guides, leveling up classes to be like the videos to avoid reinventing success), and succeed (thus proceeding to use a subligar like a towel and slap that fabulous roegadyn in the locker room, whoo hoo!!!). Taking the game seriously all the time, that would hinder even my fun. Like riding a chocobo with a small limp beak. Although the size of their beak shouldn't affect their performance as a chocobo, I sometimes question it.
