Yoshinori Kitase and the way SE incorporates player feedback

    http://www.next-gen.biz/features/yos...fantasy-xiii-2

I facepalmed on almost every reply.

Dear god I hope feedback of XIV doesn't go through this sort of broken phone communication.

I almost held my breath when I saw the last question about Toryama (why isn't he fired yet!? I mean honestly, why SE?) and after reading the reply I can't but still wander the same question that Edge asked Kitase.

    Good interview, good answers.

Toriyama can't make a proper story but he is a good asset nonetheless. There is no point in firing him, as he is a competent director, but they should seriously reconsider his role in the overall picture of things. He should be nowhere near the script team.

You know I don't think it's Motomu Toriyama's fault FFXIII had the flaws that it did. The artists on that game took in the HD era like it was heroin and didn't know how to control themselves, leading to areas that probably took a year to develop (Bodhum) that you clear in about 45 minutes. The problem was that as an organization SE didn't know how to operate a high-tech production in a reasonable timeframe. Crystal Tools was a fiasco and a misguided attempt to leverage HD era production techniques. That's why they had to cut out over half of the game, leaving the mangled mess that remained. They simply couldn't produce the content they needed in the time required. So I wouldn't single out Toriyama - if anything it's Kitase himself that is to blame, although I have the feeling it's more like the combined incompetence of many artist team leaders and programmers that is truly to blame.

So basically SE thinks every single change they make is for the best for the fanbase and we know nothing about what we want. Great. I guess we know what not to expect for 2.0 - _ -

They should know that the truth hurts and stay low profile about it.

It's been pretty much established for a long time that FF fanbase is a headless chicken waiting to be put out of it's misery.

Player's actually don't know what they want because it changes with the current flow of things -- Players want one thing one day then they say "nonono I want THIS instead!" the next since they never think of the game.

Also, the content was right there, but players weren't smart enough to find it.

    Here is another good one:

[People who play RPGs are] depressed gamers who like to sit alone in their dark rooms and play slow games.

The fanbase knowing what they want doesn't = listening to every single fan. It means getting a general understanding of what fans want based on what's high in demand. SE's logic for the last few years seems to be "Well...let's try doing this instead! It's never been done and our fans will definitely appreciate it." while ignoring the obvious things fans have been craving for. It's good to be innovative and try new things, but when you decide to try things nobody asks for rather than take care of your fanbase first, then it leads to problems.
