Believe what you want, but there are honestly very few trolls left on these forums. Most have moved on to bigger and better things. Many of the Debbie Downers are those who still see potential in this game, but are just bored and/or frustrated while waiting for improvements and can't walk away. The white knights band together like a pack of rabid dogs and the insults begin. Anyone who dares to speak up is verbally beaten down, told their opinions should be ignored, they're incompetent, whiners, liars, etc etc etc.
Telling people that if they don't like it to GTFO doesn't help anyone. Who wants to play an MMO with a dead community? Losing players hurts everyone.
Right now this game suffers just as much from bad community as it does from its own core issues.
My story is the same as many others. I was one of the people who said I've been here since day one (closed beta, actually), and that I'd be here till the end. Nobody was more excited and optimistic about how this game than I was. I spent months on pins and needles waiting for release. I brought my linkshell from FFXI here, I've spent countless hours creating and updating our website. I watched patches come and go, believing just like everyone else that it would get better. The new dev team. The 2.0 announcement. Discovering they've had 2.0 planned for months before they officially announced it (which oddly annoyed me). Combat I don't enjoy, old-school party grind leveling taking center stage, and powerleveling now adding to the already existing issues. Making me more frustrated and pessimistic through every patch. Yet, I'm still here. Obviously, I'm emotionally vested. Like a dysfunctional relationship I can't walk away from. Maybe subscriptions forcing a separation between me and FFXIV until it gets its act together will be a good thing after all.
I'm not cheap. I give credit where credit is due. I donate money to apps, addons and website components all the time that I could normally use for free. But I enjoy them and want development to continue. I adopted my last cat from a no-kill shelter so my $100 could go to an organization that I felt deserved the money. But SE isn't a starving artist or a non-profit organization. Nor are they a small game developer new to the scene. They are a business, a professional game company who has been putting out Final Fantasy games for 20 years, including another FF MMO. And I'm a big believer in expressing dissatisfaction with my wallet. So, this Friday, that's exactly what I will do.
I'll miss the people in my LS who are still active. I'll miss Besaid. The vast majority of people on my server are quite decent. I'll miss Thevedis and Premium Virtue (thanks for your amazing work on FFXIVpads!), and everyone else around here who kept things civil and sensible, and didn't give in to the insanity. I'll miss Neptune's unique sense of humor. And thanks to those who sent me encouraging tells in game not to let the trolls get me down.
See you guys again when 2.0 rolls around!
