How does keeping a pretend house standing help people who's real houses have fallen?

Realistically, it doesn't. But anyone knows that, when experiencing great tragedy in life, it's the really small things that AREN'T going wrong that give you the hope you need to continue on and rebuild. Even if it's something as silly and ineffectual as a virtual house, it can act as a beacon of hope and a reminder that the whole world isn't really going to hell.

Wait so; with one sentence you state that owning a house IS special; then a few later you say people just sell them as if they're just common place and are NOT special... so which is it?

If they are special they SE needs to address the shortage as a whole and/or uphold the guidelines they set forward. If they are NOT special, then they need to not kowtow to people and not make exceptions.

Which is it?

They are special almost entirely in their sentimental value, not in some sort of effectual way. They only become important for any one person once sentimentality is formed around them. I agree that SE should fix the housing shortage, because there's no excuse for that - it's just not good design. But them not fixing the housing shortage should not hinder and does not contradict their trying to symbolically ease the burdens of those struck by natural disasters.
