While the above list isn't my list of favorite FF characters (Shantotto and Zell would be on that list) it's just few examples of what kind of good characters FF series has had so far.
XIV however has none that I can even remotely care about. While Y'stola's (see how am I supposed to remember her name?!) visual design is slightly better than your average npc she really doesn't have much of personality. She merely describes the convoluted plot and then leaves for another 70 hours to be seen only in the handful of in-game cutscenes.
While in a single player game this would be just an irreversible disaster XIV has all the opportunities in the world to make these characters more interesting and more importantly meaningful to the player.
I'm requesting more attention to how the characters are integrated into the gameplay and quest-lines that bring us closer to our Eorzean non playing characters.
Please give them more chances to meet us in the battlefields or join us in a co-op crafting/fishing sessions.
Good storytelling has little to do with server issues and this is one aspect of the game that could be improved upon before 2.0 arrives.
