    MSQ - what's next? [spoilers]

So, after all that happened in the msq finale, and Omega being a side story, I've kept wondering what will be the next step in the msq?

You guys think Varis will be the next villain, or that Elidibus scene was just a tease for something come next xpac?

What are the options left? There are some unexplored areas nearby Doma. There's Hingashi main land. There's Thavnair...

My money is on Othard. A Review of the map shows 5-6 areas on the mainland of which we have only visited 2: Doma/Yanxia and the Azim Steppes.

I imagine the developers believe that Eorzean content is getting to be quite boring for the player base following the crescendo of the first part of Stormblood. While it is possible that more of Hingashi will be opened up, I think the nation accomplished it's purpose of giving us a new city and housing hub and the rest of the development will be on the mainland. As for what may draw us over there, it is hard to say. Besides Elidibus taking off his mask we didn't get the kind of cliffhanger we did at the end of HW - everything tied up nicely.

Well, the fact that two Doman characters of note survived the end of the MSQ may tip us to new content in the area. Depending of course on how those two characters are used of course.

I am most interested in what the area on the map called "The Burn" is. It seems like the surface of the moon rather than an earthly landscape. Not an ideal location for tourism perhaps.

The Burn looks like Ye Olde Wasteland with some craters for... whatever reason. Probably some Allag thing where they had a war or something.

It looks about the size of a city-state and its surrounding area. Whispers say it might be Bozja.

The testing grounds for the Meteor Project? I was never fully apprised of what exactly happened there, being a new player.

This is only secondhand because I'm not a Legacy player, but long story short:

The Meteor Project was kicked off at an unknown point in the past with Garlemald's approval. Cid's father, Midas nan Garlond, developed a prototype Lunar Transmitter. It was tested 10 years prior to Legacy at Bozja Citadel... which was completely destroyed on that day. (And Midas was killed, too. Maybe. Not sure on that one.)

Garlemald still supported the Meteor Project despite this incident, which ultimately led to Cid's defection and the Calamity.

    EDIT
As for where I think we're going next and what we're gonna do? Dunno. I'm not keen on trying my hand at prescience. We do know there's a lot of reconstruction, both physical and social, that will need to take place in Doma and Ala Mhigo, which will probably be the focus of the 4.x patch series. (I know we're not done with Doma since there's an unusable airship dock in Kugane.)

Personally I feel Hingashi and Thavnair are too small to be proper expansions - they're both rather small island nations. Other than the areas others have already pointed out, the only place currently on the map large enough to host an actual expansion is... Garlemald's home turf.

There is supposedly a land of dragons near Doma. We might just meet another one of First Brood over there.

Just to step in and offer a slight correction...this was certainly the reason Cid decided to defect from Garlemald but within Garlemald itself many were opposed to the Meteor Project. Gaius and Varis are amongst those who expressed their doubts and opposition and they just happen to be two of the most prominent Garlean characters that we've encountered to date. It's all wonderfully nuanced with shades of grey rather than white and black!

As for what is next? I suspect that the upcoming patches will focus around the rebuilding of Ala Mhigo and Doma. The latter already has a clear leader figure in the form of Hien but for Ala Mhigo things are less clear. There's also Fordola and Yotsuyu to consider as their stories are clearly not over and they will seemingly have a major part to play in the patches to come.

I'm personally hoping that the Garlean Consulate in Kugane will be used to push for diplomatic relations with Garlemald. Realistically the Warrior of Light and Scions should be doing everything possible to avoid further bloodshed - good men and women will be slain on both sides of the conflict if it continues and by all accounts the Scions should be far more neutral as a faction than it currently is. I'm hoping we will get a 'Larsa' type character that serves to build a bridge between Garlemald and the Warrior of Light. We could have had that in Regula but he was, unfortunately, slain. That his sacrifice has not given the Warrior of Light and Scions any pause in regards to their crusade is very troubling in itself, though. So hopefully that is addressed in the patches to come.

And as I've said before, a few prominent individuals decrying the Meteor Project doesn't change the fact enough of Garlemald still supported it to make it go through. Garlemald, as a sovereign nation, supported the Meteor Project. Cling to moral greyness and nuance all you like - that will not change.

It is most definitely a case of moral greyness - which in itself is very subjective when it comes to fictional settings but also circumstantially over in the real world as well. I'll bring the discussion over to the Stormblood Ending thread, though - as I brought up my point regarding Cid in much more depth over there!
