my first pickaxe confusion

hey guys im trying to find copper ore for the first time outside gate of sultana but when i use prospect or try to find any copper ore nothing happens. i have my pickaxe equipped too but i have no idea what im doing wrong please help thanks guys.

You should be doing everything correct, if you turn on prospect, you should be able to find a level 5 mining node at Central Thanalan (x18,y25)

Gear will increase your gathering, perception and GP which increases your likelihood of obtaining an item, increases HQ chance, and increases amount of GP respectively. While I don't think you will need gear to mine copper ore, it is worth investing in to increase those stats.

I believe you get a mount (chocobo) as part of the main scenario quest just after you enlist in a grand company (~lvl 20). If you have done so you can find the quest My Little Chocobo from either R'ashaht Rhiki - Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (x13, y12), Vorsaile Heuloix - New Gridania (x9, y11), or Swift - Ul'dah - Steps of Nald (x8, y8) depending on your chosen grand company.

If you look on your minimap there should be a blue or yellow pickaxe on there if you're at the node locations. If you don't see them after using prospect, you're not at the right spot.

To see mineral deposits you have to have prospect active, to mine you have to have the pickax equipped. They show up on your minimap when you get close to them. So exit Ul'Dah via the Gate of Nald. This should put you in Central Thanalan south of the Black Brush Station aetheryte. From the gate, hang a left and follow the walls and cliffs for a short journey. Before you get to the river in the area of the map roughly near "Stonesthrow" you should find a set of 4 mining nodes, these are your copper ore(and a couple other things). Once you level up this will get easier. At level 2 you get a trait that automatically turns on prospect when you switch class to miner(so you can no longer forget to turn it on). Then at level 3 you get an ability usable every 30 seconds that points you toward the nearest mining node and tells you roughly how far it is.

At level 3 you will get lay of the land, this can be used to locate mining nodes far easier and will help you in the future, I'm glad you got your problem sorted
