Job NPCs and their interaction with the MSQ

    First of all, hi.

I was wondering what people's thoughts are on NPCs that mainly appear in the Job questlines, being more involved in the main story.
I think Estinien in Heavensward showed that a character introduced in a Job can very easily integrate in the main story and provide the player more characters to interact with. That said, I and a few people I know had hoped Stormblood would also do more of this and when we saw Oboro in the benchmark trailer we assumed that was what would happen. Rather disappointingly Oboro only appeared a very short time in the main story and for Monks Widagelt doesn't appear at all even though he whole schtick early in the Monk storyline was that he was about as obsessed with Ala Migho as maybe even Illberd. With some really major themes like liberation of two states you'd think it would make sense for them to be more involved but maybe that's just me.
    Thoughts?

I'm a little jilted by Oboro's cameo, but Widargelt's lack of involvement made perfect sense to me. He's lost his zeal for taking back Ala Mhigo by the end of 2.0 and by 3.0 he's found a new purpose: rebuilding the Fist of Rhalgr. This isn't at odds with liberation of Ala Mhigo per se, but I think not including him did his character more credit--if that makes sense?

I liked Oboro a lot and when I saw him in the trailer I thought there might be something but just having that one scene... that was shown in the trailer... made me a little bummed.

I suspect that Widargelt was sidelined purely so that he would not overshadow Lyse. Cynical of me, perhaps, but when two characters better suited to leadership of the Ala Mhigan Resistance conveniently died and two others weren't even acknowledged directly as leadership contenders...it certainly feels that way. We'll have to see if he shows up in a future patch now that Gyr Abania has been mostly reclaimed but if he does not then I call shenanigans.

From what I've been able to tell from the MNK job quests, he's more focused on restoring the Fist of Rhalgar. He pretty much declined to join the resistance at the beginning of the SB MNK quests because his thirst for vengeance was long since gone. I would be surprised if he has any involved in the more political and complicated features simply because he really seem to have disconnected himself from Ala Mhigo to focus on the goals of his new order.

Honestly the whole direction of Widargelt from the end of ARR has been away from simply Liberating Ala Mhigo. That is discussed in the very first SB MNK quest were he references his lessons learned at the end of ARR and HW. That isn't how he wants to serve Ala Mhigo. More to the point, he has literally no interest in his birthright and is instead rather horrified by it. I suspect likewise he will seek to keep the Fist of Rhalgr out of politics. The new Fist is about helping the Ala Mhigans once more return to their religious traditions and empowering the people of Ala Mhigo with the strength to protect their own.

How very fitting of him. From what I've gathered in regards to sidequests and what not about the monks, the path Widargelt seems to be taking is a good one. He's living the example, forsaking his birthright for something more important. Titles mean nothing compared to the restoration of a people and their culture. Makes me want to get my MNK up to 70 to see the story for myself.

The thing is, one of the dungeons that launched with 4.0 literally revolves around reclaiming an abandoned monk temple. Widargelt could easily have been involved with that without it feeling contrived.

Considering his general stance and interest in teaching others, I wouldn't be surprised if X'rhun from the Red Mages quests became a bit more involved in the MSQ going forward. Could even see him joining the Scions.

Technically the quest isn't about reclaiming the Temple at all, but simply escorting Marjorie through it. There's no real indication whatsoever from the quest that the Temple of the Fist will ever be opened again. It's just us escorting a scholar through a ruin--Widargelt could've been involved, sure, but given his arc in Stormblood I can see why he wasn't. He wants to build a new Fist, not merely revive the old one.

We could see him and Alisaie interact. She WAS trained by him after all.
