Got to episode 3 before I couldn't take anymore. Too many awkward pauses, too much saccharine drama, an unbearably creepy premise about E-stalking your parent while pretending to be a stranger. And the machinima bits were the worst. The lalafell players had nothing better to do than be Akio's personal dolls? The entire guild was committed to catfishing his dad? Everyone always hangs out at the guild house for meetings when there's a frickin' chat box in the left hand corner of the screen that you can use from anywhere in the game world? And his issues with his job were also beyond believability. Does a sales rep need to be shown how to have a bullshit conversation with a customer over drinks? Really? The casual sexism of the script was a riot too. So, Japanese women are just a gaggle of superficial hummingbirds who'll leave a well-paying corporate job during a recession if the uniforms aren't cute enough? Okay. Sure.

This is actually a very real thing in the Japanese corporate sales culture. Sales or account representatives are expected to develop a level of personal relationship with their client companies and their representatives because they are seen as the "face" of their company and their company always wants to be seen presenting a "friendly face". So things like personalized gifts, taking the clients out to dinner or drinks and being able to develop and have a "connection" with the clients is considered part of the job, hence the need to know how to have a "bs" conversation with them. Sure it may seem silly, fake, or ridiculous to others but it is just a part of the culture, just like the expectation that you are going to go out, socialize and drink with your work colleagues in order to be seen as a "team player" is also a thing and don't get me started on the pressures and expectations associated with omiyage, which also made a passing appearance in the show. A lot of this stuff is also present in the Western corporate world, just not as ingrained and prevalent.

The consideration of leaving the job because of the corporate uniform was the opinion of one employee that was acted upon in hopes that it would placate any others that may be harboring similar grievances, it wasn't necessarily that all the young women at the company felt that way.
Working at the company was also portrayed, at least as far as I could gather, to actually not pay all that well (pretty sure there was a line that directly said this), was pretty "meh", but was at least stable.
Based on that and that the group of employees that they were afraid may quit, intelligent young women, it came off to me less as "sexism" and more they were worried that some of their workforce may feel that they could do better than their current jobs and wanted to find out what gripes those employees might have so they can make those little quality of life changes to make them less likely to quit. It just happened that the one employee that they got feedback from had issue with the uniform.
Was the complaint about the corporate uniform potentially silly? Maybe, but I have seen many sales reps, customer service workers, etc. in America complain about their work uniforms and a good number that quit their job because they didn't like it and felt they could easily get another job that was as good as or better than the one they are leaving.

You are, of course, more than entitled to your own opinion on the show and nobody should feel they have to like or dislike the show for whatever reason, I just did not see the situations in question in the same way you did.

I definitely agree that the psuedo "cyber-stalking" of his dad was awkward if not creepy. I kept thinking that his dad was probably wondering if the cat-girl online was flirting with him, but then again with how clueless his son was to such things it probably didn't cross his mind.

Really funny show. A lot of inside and japones (aka otaku) jokes.

-Good drama, good comedy. Can't wait for season 2.
    Point of note:

The son has the Legacy tattoo. So that narrows the server they are "on". So that appears to be a real character. The FC the character is in appears to have the other characters that appear in the staged segments.

It is obviously a J-drama, as J-dramas have a certain aesthetic that is different from anime or other drama's and it's not to everyone's taste. Basically I've seen this kind of "show the problem, character sees an analogy elsewhere and applies it to solve the problem" in other J-drama's and it always feels a bit forced. By the 6th episode it gets past the formulaic feeling. Because it is a Japanese production it is much easier to give this a pass than if it was an American/Canadian production which would get slammed for pacing.

I was thinking something looked very wrong with the game footage and then I remembered I'm watching it on a TV that has the framerate enhancement and that's why it looks off.

Well, if nothing else it's a realistic reflection of the sort of things that go on behind closed doors on Balmung.

It's almost like they were being social in an MMORPG. /sarcasm

Do you never hang out with fellow FC members in or around an FC house?

It's a Jdrama guys...there are some elements that they exaggerate to make it more interesting nothing more.
In the reality side, not many ppl would give a crap about your father much less mobilizing whole FC members to aid you.

This is probably one rare instance that yoshi-p wanted to show that playing a MMO game isn't about just the DPS deeps but it's the community that makes the game for what it is.

I enjoyed the Hell out of it. I really liked the 2 girls friends who were bickering. They were hilarious. I also feel sorry for his other female coworker. How could Akio be so dense?! The mom was lovely and the dad was great.

Fantastic show, I would love to see a continuation of it in some form. I know it was based on a true story but I'd love to see it grow!
