How to Tank ranked PvP?

, if the enemy team doesnt pick medals on the ground within 1 minute (i think), those medals go back to the owner.

It's actually about 10 seconds ish. The better way to think about it is, once the player who has dropped the medals respawns they are returned if not picked up.
