I have an alt character on a friends server and I don't want to go through the long story again to play with them. My main question is will I need to buy both the Tales of Adventure: ARR and the Job version of that to be at a level to do the Heavensward content? I sure the answer is obvious but it still confuses me.

Yes you would. Tales of Adventure ARR will only skip all the MSQ quests, leaving you with a level 1 character that will have an even more difficult time levelling since the MSQ really is the fastest way to level your first job in this game.

Using the ARR tales will skip all of the quests from 2.0-2.55 and unlock all the mandatory story duties in DF. From there your options are to either powerlevel to 50 manually, or use a job tales book to jump to 60.

Well the answer is Yes and No lol. If you purchase just the main scenario potion, that will skip ARR for you (HW if you buy that potion as well), but that doesn't raise your character level. Only the Job potion will do that, so if you want to play with your friends and have a character that's 50+, purchase MSQ skip only. If you have a character that's lower, purchase both. Keep in mind the restriction still applies, 1 Job potion per account. Decide if you want to boost that character or not on your own risk.

Ok thanks, I was confused about the whole thing and never really gave it much thought until recently and wanted to know what my options were before I spent more money than I should have.

I personally bought a Tales of Adventure: Heavensward with an alt i had at close to 50. I'm leveling it to 60 on my own now rather than buy the role skip as well. I still need to do role quests (she's a whm) and Hildi and will have to unlock the some trials and 24 man raids. It doesn't do it all but is sure keeps you from running story again.
