Just play literally anything but healer and feel like you can't influence the match at all...because you can't.
I think many of us see the potential for misuse (just like we foresaw Quick Chat being misused), but it only stands to reason that because we see it, we try to keep ourselves above it. If you have to say anything, try to be constructive, don't instead lend validation to the misinterpretation that PvP is so toxic and full of harassment. And if you receive a nasty tell, don't reply, just ignore or report.
This is untrue. As a DPS you have a lot of sway over the match, just not as much as the healer or the tank.
If DPS had no sway at all the few of us who climbed wouldn't have been able to.
There is a plain and clear difference between constructive and helpful criticism, to help your fellow person get better in PVP, and flat out being toxic and yelling at people to stop playing PVP and calling them garbage and so forth.
Calling toxic banter a form of criticism is extremely poor. You can tell someone they made a mistake and call them shit, but that does nothing but demoralize the player. You can tell them they made a mistake, they should try out A or B, or try to follow certain rules of thumb. The point it to give guidance to a player to correct their mistakes, not to beat them while they're down.
Hey man you know you should probably try doing X thing/ you know sometimes DPS have to pick up medals/You should probably do XYZ for your burst combo...
Is usually met with...
GO F OFF AND DIE/ YOU DONT PAY MY SUB/ I PLAY HOW I WANT/ F YOU YOU B/
Sometimes people really don't like any form of criticism .
I can't do either, right now. The best I can do is wave my arms, place a mark over a player, and use a quick chat feature. There is a plain and clear difference between constructive and helpful criticism, to help your fellow person get better in PVP, and flat out being toxic and yelling at people to stop playing PVP and calling them garbage and so forth.

I would absolutely love to genuinely help other players learn to improve. I'm in a great pvp linkshell and there's a ton of help there. But I can't do anything for strangers!

If they want to be garbage and not improve their game, then let them fall. You did your part in being helpful, and sadly not every one is as open minded to helpful criticism.Hey man you know you should probably try doing X thing/ you know sometimes DPS have to pick up medals/You should probably do XYZ for your burst combo...
