SE don't worry about the bard music

Unless people are sampling the instruments, and commercially releasing it without persmission, I ask that you please consider chilling about it. Protecting your copyright, and brand from being abused is important, but if we want to go off, and play non FFXIV songs, please don't stress. That will only hurt your brand more, because people will be upset about it. I find that companies being too strong about these things, rather than on a case by case basis, does way more harm than good for anyone.

This whole 'please don't say anything even slightly negative' mentality that we seem to be going towards and the devs seemingly pushing towards it is creating a disturbing trend.

Custom bard music is coming in 4.1, and they warned us that if we upload it too much, with songs that are not XIV related, they'd have to take it down for legal reasons. I think this is way too extreme.

I think that was a half-joke, half-shot at how overprotective a lot of recording labels are over music that they own.

Still, I doubt that a copying using soundbites rendered in an MMO would garner the attention of such, nevermind to such an extent that they'd go after SE for it.

I don't know. Nintendo is wayyyyy over protecting of their copyrights for example. Some companies go way too far, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were true.

And you'd be wrong. If record labels are willing to file DMCA complaints against a mothers youtube video of her baby dancing to a prince song that lasted less than 20 seconds then yes, they will go after anything they can. If people create videos of protected music being played inside FF14 then you can almost guarantee that no only will there be take down requests but also lawsuits against SE unless SE can show they are definitely not in favor of it and are taking actions against those people who create those videos.

In short, the American music industry is full of over zealous lawyers and SE is only trying to cover their own asses with that statement...and really I can't fault them for it.

But as with many things, what SE says and what SE does aren't always the same. So upload at your own risk.

This is only when you record your bard playing and post it online right? Aslong as I am only playing it in the game, nothing will happen, am I correct?

Perhaps I'm reading too much into it but my take away was:
    1. Anything in your house or private instance with a limited audience is fair game.
    2. Anything in a crowded public area (Limsa, Kugane, etc) is fine in small amounts.
    3. Perpetually playing something over and over again in a public area may not be ok, or if macroing it is possible, don't afk macroing it for long periods of time.
    4. Post videos online at your own risk of being taken down by SE or other parties.

    Oh Good!
I noticed they didn't mention this in the live letter thread thing. I'm glad its not a joke~

Uhm, I'm suppose they mean for youtubers, and copyright strikes. That's why they say play only ffxiv music.

For those not knowing Bards are getting some kind of emote with an instrumental music a flute for now but more instruments added down the road.
You can macro musical notes on your bar. etc o/ fun times

IE/ Mario Paint in FFXIV ;p

I'm no t sure about if it is illegal. Technically, SE is not responsible what music player performs. They give the tools yes, but that doesn't mean they have to control what music players performs. There are a lot of Games like Grand Theft Auto V and Metal Gear Solid V where you can put custom music form your library and it is not illegal. This should be a similar case, the only difference is player performing it instead of just reproduce a sound file.

Imagine if Nintendo retire the Mario Paint because player create and share music with copyright. All the YouTube video of Mario pain will be erased. If Mario Pain can, FFXIV can.
