I wanted to reply to so many things in this, but then I read it a second time and realized that you're probably so coked out of your head right now, wherever you are in 1980's corporate America, that there is ZERO chance I could somehow penetrate the decades of time between your thought process and mine.
Don't forget to shave that upper lip again soon, your five o'clock shadow is coming in all hitler like.

Id take the 500k guaranteed ff11 fans with a continuation of ffonline series and keep it to the roots, then id invest on another mmorpg with a different name if i want to try new things. That way id get money from both.
umm, weather be 1million subs or 500subs, mmo's like this don't last. and don't try to look at wow as an example that is a situation in all it's own. all other mmo's are dying out quick with this type of mmo gameplay. leaving only the hardcore dedicated to that game playing.
weather they want to or not mmo's should all be a niche in some form or another. this hole, everyone can play the same mmo together bs is nonsense. theres game play you like and things you don't like. people don't have eye googles on ...it's that they like that type of play. it's like making a tv show that's for sci fi geeks and soap opra lovers ...ummm it don't work, why would i sit threw all the bs to get to the little bit of sci fi stuff in it. i wouldn't ..in a week of watching i'd realize it's a joke and stop. that is what all these mmo's are doing to this type of players, pushing them out in a few months. ....but in the end it's not like the other group stays, why? cause the other side are like locusts. you know it and i know it, this type of mmo can't keep anyone even the most casual playing for that long. so they move onto the next mmo.
either way in the end what will happen to our mmo's if they see the trend is buy play toss ...just like our offline games?
but any who, i'm sure we are all open minded, it's just that innovation to some is a step backwards to others. i don't need them to repackage what i already had, nor do i need them to take away everything we already had in mmo's then give us a smidge of it at a time and say this is for you. no thanks.
oh p.s. i loved every ff title... even X and X2. and i been playing ff titles since the first one came out and when it came out as a little kid. i don't complain less there is something really annoying happening like in ffxiv.

@Weeble
Then the issue is with content and not with digging old inefficient ideas up to please fans of old inefficient ideas.
If this game had the content you 24/7 players crave, posts like this wouldn't be emerging.
Instead, non-imaginative community members are posting requests for old content to be reused as a half-A$$ed solution for pleasing hardcore fans.
I couldn't think of a worse idea...
What we need are original ideas that are approachable by ALL cross-sections of MMO goer's, not just the niche crowd.
Doing that results in mediocre success and results.
Obtaining a few million subscribers isn't impossible and could easily happen again with the right formula in place.
Take my idea for example:
http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...l=1#post526527
Now that's a legitimately unique and fresh twist that could be brought to the FF MMO scene to appease ALL types of players.
I swear to god, if you hardcore fans think that your word should hold more weight over another average casual player in the devs minds, you'll be the frickin death or TERRIBLE sub numbers of this game.
Flush that mentality right now...

Lower the attitude, tough guy.
Every game, mmo or not, is a niche game. Every single game caters to a certain crowd. You want it to cater to what you like, we want it to cater to what we like. Lets calm down throwing the word "niche" around.
I just want long-term goals, and I can see it working here, it just doesn't seem like its going to. It seems the game is going to be catered to the casual side (casual niche, ha).
I'm not saying make these things necessary (Like EMP weapons almost are for DD in XI now), just give me a worthwhile goal I can latch on to. If there are long term goals, with upgrades to the rewards as level cap rises, please keep the cop-out upgrade moogle storyline out of it.
I feel like the achievment rewards are great examples of what your talking about. Things like the golden tools and the crowns. And while they may not be for everyone, adding more things like this in the game that are an OPTION to do wouldn't hurt anyone at all. It could only improve the game. I think there is a way that they can have both in one game easily. It is my hope that is what Yoshi wants to do with this game, as his roadmap appears to being trying to bridge the casual and hardcore gap. I certainly hope they bring back rewarding parties with the experience of working together much like xi was able to do. It is those core mechanics I miss most from Xi to XIV.

Also, my ears are bleeding from hearing things like "If you want to level the old way in FFXI, nobody is stopping you" and "Let us choose our own difficulty for the same rewards" and "Let them have a time-sink, but let us be able to get those items through casual-style quests too".
Come on, people... We're all smarter than this...

I really hope SE does make a FFXI-2 someday, pre abyssea of course (I quit before abysea came out in case you were wondering, but I heard enough about it to make a fairly informed opinion about it). Many people on this forum have claimed in the past that the feelings that many of us felt in FFXI are purely nostalgic, claiming those feelings are just because “it was the first mmo we played" or "we were younger and more easily impressed". Although this might be part of it, I feel that it was only a small part.
I had many similar feelings of accomplishment playing other MMO's, such as when I faced the Lich King or played countless PvP battles to finally get a high enough rank to get my PvP weapon and shoulders in WoW. The excitement and sense of accomplishment that I felt while doing these things was the same as when I was completing CoP missions with my static group, getting my O-hat, finally getting that piece of gear from a HNM, or when I finally got the drops I wanted from killing Gods in Sky or Sea with my LS.
What do these things have in common you may wonder? Well it's fairly simple, these tasks took dedication, skill, practice, and could not be completed by just anyone who bought an account on E-bay or spent hundreds of dollars buying in game currency. When I finally completed these tasks I had a real sense of accomplishment, something in my opinion that is completely lacking from FFXIV.
This type of game is obviously not for everyone, and unfortunately games like FFXI and WoW have slowly been turned into the type of game that FFXIV is currently. Where everyone can get everything in a month or two and end game content difficulty is reduced over and over again. This is done to make sure that every single person playing, no matter how horrible they are or how much time they have to play has a chance to get whatever items they want in a couple months of play time.
What would be better for SE, a FFXI-2 MMO with 500k dedicated subscribers, or a FFXIV MMO that tries to be different just for the sake of being different and has maybe 20-30k subscribers at the most, many of which are just hoping that the game gets turned into something worthy of the Final Fantasy name.
everything you wrote steggan was like in my brain and you just scribbled it down for me lol. very well said. it is the real reason i'm holding hope for this game. it's the only reason i kept playing threw the f2p part. its all in hopes that SE wakes up and turns the game into the fun and challenge that ffxi was.
there is only 5 ways this game can turn out. 1. start easy and casual and stay that way.2. slowly get easier
3. slowly get harder
4. servers shut down from sucking arse. theres a 5th and that is f2p, but a game that goes f2p has to start off with lots of content i think? it's not like they add new content to it. so will this game have lots of content at 2.0 ..in the way of being able to stay f2p, i doubt it. i think SE would just shut down the game though they can feed on players willing to still pay monthly with a total access like dcu does and what they doing right now lol.
where am i going with this is ..i think it all depends on there player base and what will be left after the smoke clears the room and i'm still hoping that it will be me lol.
by the way the pre reqs for moogle battle were in the right direction to fun stuff ...only thing is i think they made it easier? i left bout that time and never did do a moogle fight. but that was fun and exciting. probably more so then the actual fight of the moogle itself. lets hope they stop dumbing it down for the whiners and say tough tomatoes to them instead.
