I'm not confident about tanking at all; but I want to learn. I've tried Warrior a bit; but the idea my group aggro skill is directional is a bit of a put-off. Would Paladin be a better choice to begin with? Flash seems a whole lot easier.

Yes, Pally is the most beginner friendly tank.
Definitely PLD.

Overpower might take a bit of getting used to, but there really isn't anything that you can do with Flash that you can't with Overpower. Overall, I've found WAR to be extremely forgiving to play since HW, and SW has done a lot to simplify the job since then. I would start out with WAR, and then perhaps try branching out to either PLD or DRK once you become more comfortable with tanking mechanics.
Warrior dps compared to other tanks is significantly harder and less forgiving, most punishing for being in tank stance too (whilst not an immediate concern would help him optimize later if this was not the case). Don't make the same mistake I did by leveling a DRK as my first ever tank class, PLD is easier~
I learned the basics of playing tank by leveling Paladin, around level 30 once I understood the basics through running all of the leveling dungeons up to like Brayflox, I branched out to Warrior, used what I learned level Warrior in a similar manner and then I moved onto Dark Knight. Which back then was considered the hardest tank to play.
Paladin will help teach you the fundamentals and then you can pick up Warrior or Dark Knight, mess around with them and see which one is your fancy.
Awesome, thank you all for the tips.
