Why is spear fishing so expensive?

After eventually figuring out what I needed to do spear fishing, I went to the vendor in Gridania and the Bronze Gig is going for 13,000g. When I saw it mentioned online, it was listed as being around 900g. It's particularly annoying because I bought a fishing rod and bait and then started a bunch of fishing quests only to find out there's this mysterious "secondary item" that I need and so had to fail the quests. Now I find I can't even do them again until I get 13,000g when I'm getting about 50-100g off quests right now.

As a secondary question, is there any affordable clothing I can get to improve my fishing at this level in and around Gridania?

Oh, well at the moment I'm getting about 50g or at most 150g for quests. Also, the other starting items cost about 600-900g, which is how much that gig thing supposedly was according to one site.

Get the Weathered Gig and use it. You're leveling FSH at this point, not going to get any fantastic items at the low levels which require maxed gathering levels. I spearfished until 25 with a Weathered Gig.

Weathered gig no longer exists. They removed it about 1 month into the game and made the 2ndary tools lvl 13.
Just sell some of the fish you can find 13k lying on the floor. Even ask someone nicely to start you out. I always give away starting gear to ppl.

Um, no. Weathered secondary tools for crafters disappeared. Weathered secondary tools for gatherers still exist and can be bought at the Adventurer's Guild for under 500 gil. I can assure you that I bought, and still use, as my FSH is still only lvl 8, a Weathered Gig only a couple of weeks ago, along with the Weathered Scythe I use for BTN.

Well, dyes are probably the main thing. Brown, black and purple dyes can only be obtained with a gig. There's some other things that can be gotten only with a gig, mainly of interest in alchemy. And, of course, there are those of us who just want to get the spearfishing achievements...
