Turn off character shadows and this should solve the problem.
Type /shadow off.

ah yeah shadows..... that might be why it does not really happen to me, I keep shadows set to "low"

my shadows have been turned off and I still have the issue. Someone else in my linkshell was saying 2 sticks of ram and their graphics card fried going afk near the tree today so....
oh my.... mmm that is a problem.

Well, my graphic card burned today when i was doing the event...a Geforce 9800GT...odd enough, that's the 3rd graphic card that burns while playing FFXIV since release... ><
The intern that made that model needs to be fired.
The developer who decided to recycle the model for the new year's event needs to be slapped in the face.
The tree is very, very, pretty, but it looks like someone just got a cone shape, adjusted it a little, and then got some large branches and copy-pasted it inside the tree.
It's very graphics-intensive, and that tree was here last year. That's probably what is going on-- I've been really tempted to mod my game and replace that model with something else.
Ha... haha... I'm sad to say I've gone through about 4 graphics cards since starting FFXIV back in 2010 on the open beta...
To start, I had a nVidia GT9800 which lasted through the beta and one month of the "official" release, then it burned out.
I bought an nVidia GTS 450 which lasted six months, all the while staying around 60-80C while playing... one loud pop, some smoke and that was the end of that card.
Next up I bought an ATI 5870... that one lasted a month. Sadly, it was probably the best "performing" card that worked with FFXIV before it burned up, no slow-downs at all... perhaps it should have taken it easy trying to give me endless enjoyment.
Finally, I'd had it with throwing money away (I thought), so I bought an nVidia GTX 570 and all was good... for 2 months, then it started throwing artifacts all over the place and it was time for yet another card.
So now I'm using an nVidia EVGA GTX 570, which hasn't failed me yet.
Getting to the point of this thread though: Yes, that tree is a killer, it causes my GPU usage to shoot up to 99% and my temperature to rise a few degrees C. I wouldn't recommend anyone "afk" while looking at it unless you like spending a few thousand on new graphics cards for FFXIV... like I apparently do.
my GPU (260GTX) is running at 90%+ load most of the time and it's sitting at 62°C, which is fine for this card. I don't notice fps drops near the tree, the only times i'm dipping below 30fps is when it rains in coerthas/limsa.

You need some fans inside your PC, I run on a laptop and havent fried one graphics card since alpha, this has to be a cooling problem if laptops (with hardly any cooling options) do not fry cards.
Btw I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 works nice for FFXIV and no lag at or in the tree, I like hiding inside and throwing snowballs at people![]()

Honestly looks like its just a driver problem with most Nvidia cards, as most people with ATI cards are saying they aren't having issues. On the bright side, by turning down my texture filtering to low and making everything look terrible my GPU usage only goes from 20% up to 97% when I run through the tree now!!!!
