I would much prefer the add customization to out existing races, something that should have been done with Stormblood. Since creating a brand new race from whole cloth is a difficult venture due to gear, just take the easier route and add onto what we already have.

On the matter of the Viera, if their feet are such a concern, they could base the model more on Tactics Advanced art rather than XII itself.

The Garleans could go either way as a new race or a 3rd "tribe" of Hyur. Mechanical-wise they would still use Mana for those jobs that use it, lore-wise they would be explained that their gear allows them the ability to use (or mimic) Mana. Which basically renders Garleans an aesthetic difference. But I can see Garleans as more of another sub-tribe of Hyur.

P.S. I want more facial hair options for my Miqo'te. I would love to have more than a "tip of the chin peach fuzz".

I choose new race. Because regardless of the additional options to the current I think all races look ugly except for lalafell and hyur. And female Miqote look pretty good too. The rest are just bleh.

A quick little update: The true Garleans will not be playable. They will be briefly playable in their own questline, as your "pen-pal", but after they do their stuff for the cause, they will "retire", but the spirit of their endeavors live on in the mech they built up and succeeded by you, in a new job. Think Iron-man, but Stark "retires". The playable version of the Garlean race, or Hyur sub-tribe, will be explained as the descendants of Garlean+Eorzeans, and thus can use aether, after training. Simplest explanation is the best. That is probably all I expect from this topic for now... so see you all in a month, hopefully, upon which I will try to release the rest of the botanical vaults design.

Many role-players already design their Midlanders and Highlanders to be 'Garleans' to a pretty satisfying effect. Simply adding a 'third eye' glamour that can be dyed would go a long way towards appeasing those individuals.

With that said, I adore Garleans and find them to be the most interesting race within FFXIV's setting. I wouldn't be opposed to them being added as a playable race at some point but at the same time...it'd need to be done exceptionally well and I don't believe that it should be done until the customisation options for the existing playable races have been expanded.

As for the Garlean's inability to wield magic is concerned? The lore book states that some Garleans are capable of using it - it wouldn't be unreasonable to handwave it with the Echo or a certain plot element introduced in 4.0 that I won't mention to avoid spoilers.
