The mindless protagonist is a pretty standard feature of a bunch of rpgs. It's why these games typically provide support characters that basically act like our voice for us. I'd guess about half the games I've played had a silent main character. The idea is, obviously, self insertion (giggity), letting you interpret your own reactions, so that most players can sorta see themselves as the main character. Doesn't work too well for players that expect every character, including mc, to be at least somewhat fleshed out, wanting to experience well written characters/stories. But, you can't please everybody.
