how I like to play : I exp all my gatherers and crafters, in order to enjoy the levelling and the MSQ with my own crafted gear.
Heavensward forced me to continue the MSQ before I was able to craft the corresponding gear, because everything was story-locked, including gathering areas.
I was hoping Stormblood would have made things better. Hell no ! It's worse.

This reached a summit of craziness when I had to gather logs in Yanxia. 4 of the 6 nodes are in an unreachable area without flying mount (34,14). FOUR ! I can gather 2, then I'm screwed !

And, even worse, the tools my blacksmith can forge at lvl 64 for crafters 65, requires materials that must be gathered on nodes 70, in an area I didn't even unlock !

I love this game, but I feel constantly restrained, like there is only one way to progress : exp a job, loot stuff in dungeon, finish msq, then you are allowed to do something else.
I don't understand the thinking process behind this kind of design. That's no fun

FF is story driven game first and foremost. Enjoy the MSQ, and when that story done, enjoy the Crafting and Gathering side stories.

Or you could buy the materials off the market board. I have a friend(ex-roommate) who really enjoys crafting and has a hard time focusing on adventuring. Two years after he bought HW, he still hasnt gotten an adventuring class to level 60. He's been up to and through the gubal library(because i basically forced him), but hasnt done the questing yet to get to azys lla, and is stuck at 59. He bought SB so he could continue crafting, and will likely have 3-8 crafting classes to 70 before he ever does the Singularity Reactor fight to wrap up the MSQ from the last expansion. He sells as much stuff as he can so he can buy the mats he cant gather. He's always broke, but he plays his way. I think he's crazy(i actually know he's crazy), but its who he is.

Not really the complaint here. Complaint is OP (and, personally, myself as well) enjoy keeping several things balanced throughout MSQ progress.

What's the point of doubling back around to gather/craft when your combat class is already at cap? You've already skipped over half the stuff that could've ever been useful.

Personally, I agree. There was a small spot in ARR where a CUL quest (might've been a leve) required materials that could not be gathered by a BTN at a similar level. Frustrating to have to resort to outside means to accomplish tasks when the whole point of leveling multiple crafters/gatherers is being self sufficient.

I'm not up to this content yet, but I'm not looking forward to being blocked from keeping my DoH/L on par with W/M.

Plus, I know that when I'll have MSQ finished, I'll just lose interest in the game, until an update. I want to exp my gatherers and crafter before that. But this game doesn't allow me to.

Do you mean pine logs at the heron's flight? Isn't there some set of stairs that allow you to get up there?

There is. And you can't use them.
To verify : Go there, make sure your mount is configured to enter fly mode with double jump, and try to reach the upper part without flying.
Unless I'm stupid, you just can't, there is a missing step.
