Steps:
1. Accept level 20 Pugilist quest from Chuchuto.
2. Read dialogue and check quest journal to see 6 hornet stingers are needed.
3. Travel East of Black Brush station.
4. Attack trees and kill beeshornets.
5. After the first group, you will see 1/3 stingers collected.
6. Likewise, continue through the second and third groups and you will be done with that section with only 3 stingers total.

Disregard. Misunderstanding on my part.
Text is... awkward, but not incorrect. You do need 6 stingers; you just get 2 for each tree you attack. The objective "Use Bootshine on the indentations and collect hornet stingers" ticks 3 times (1/3, 2/3, and 3/3) which appears as though it's counting the number of stingers (since the original objective you are given is specifically tied to the number of stingers collected), but it's actually counting the number of indentations/trees you are attacking.
