    PS4 controller

    Hello guys,

I have been an FFXIV player since pre ARR (I was in the beta of version 1.0), but due to issues with my pc I have been unable to play for a while. I recently purchased a ps4, and with it the complete edition of ffxiv again so I can resume playing.

I am finding it hard to use the ps4 controller to do things you could easily do with the mouse on PC. For example, I am trying to use the pad in the middle to point to windows to focus them so I can close them out, etc (just like you would with a mouse), with unexpected results.

Does anybody have any pointers for using a ps4 controller? I am slowly starting to get used to the keybinds, but I just find that it's really difficult to use the controller to do things that you could easily do with the mouse on PC.

You can hook up a keyboard/mouse to the PS4. as for controller, it just takes time and how you set up your own hotbars. I prefer controller over keyboard/mouse personally.

How do you navigate the windows using the controller? Every time I use the touchpad a cursor appears, but as soon as I click it down over a window it does something unexpected. Is there a way to set it up to act more like a mouse using this functionality?

If you require full mouse functionality without having an actual mouse, then you can use the Virtual Mouse function by holding L1 and pressing R3. By doing this, the R3 stick becomes your movement for the cursor, whilst L2 and R2 as left and right click respectively.

Personally I hardly use the above unless I am messing around with my HUD or hovering over things that don't show otherwise. Just clicking the touch pad should navigate you through certain windows. It's a big change going from keyboard and mouse to controller but eventually you'll find a way that works for you if you decide to stick to it.

I use a mouse for windows. controller for everything else. It will switch seemlessly on PS4. mouse was way faster than the damn touchpad

Yeah, the way it's working now, I use the touchpad to hover over a window (or to click an action inside a window (like to click a quest in the journal, for example), and when I click the touch pad (as if it were a left click), it takes me out of that window and clicks another one somewhere). It's really frustrating, especially if I am trying to open/close a window quickly because a mob starts attacking or something.

yep. just use a mouse and the controller then. it's one less thing to worry about. the touchpad while great in theory isnt effective for fast selection. When I was on PS4 i had the controller for gameplay, keyboard for chat, mouse for selections. All three worked great. I just used a simple cheap logitech wireless keyboard and mouse. had zero issues with it connecting to the ps4.

A controller is rather easy once you get the feel for it. And in regards to the windows, don't use the touchpad its just horrible, use the buttons on the bottom of the touch pad, specifically the bottom left, that's the select button. Pressing that cycles through your open windows and some hud stuff.

I wasn't aware the touchpad had buttons on it, I thought it was all just one big button. That's good to know! So if I click the 'select' button on it, it will cycle the cursor through all the open windows and hud elements on the screen? Very helpful.

to use the touch pad as a mouse, you barely tap on it when you are over what you wish to be selected, kinda like you would do with a laptop mousepad. You can also drag and drop things like abilities into hotbars by double tap and hold
