It seems that Novice Network really seems worth it.
And the community is nice and generally helps new players?

Well, your mileage may vary. For every person praising XIV's friendly community there's another one who had a terrible experience. And the Novice Network is no different. For what it's worth I think XIV has a much friendlier community than the other online games I've played over the years, but I came from a PvP background so my standards are kind of low. :P People are willing to help if you're willing to ask and put forth some effort most of the time.

I can't speak for other worlds, but the NN on Gilgamesh is kind of stagnant compared to other worlds since it's locked to newcomers but for the most part it's helpful. Mentors use it for bantz and chatting but they'll interrupt all that if a sproutling asks a question. And unless you ask something truly obscure most of the time you'll get a satisfactory reply.
