    Introduction to the community

    Hello FF 14 community.

My name is Zansetsu Kasanui or Splat.

I am very new to FF 14, i am just level 15, this game is still very unknown for me as it is the first ever FF MMO i ever played, plus i came from World of Warcraft and in my opinion even if they have similar aspects to it they feel like very different at the same time.
I have read many people complaining that this game is very similar to WoW, i personally think that well first of all WoW was not the 1st MMO game out there and even WoW copied elements from other games before him and still does to this day, it's not a bad thing but a way to improve things.
FF 14 of course it has and i will discover them with time, things that are very very similar to WoW but i was amazed how this game has a proper feeling to it, maybe it's because it is a FF game and it has that Japanese feeling to it i don't know, each time that i play the game it feels unique compared to other MMO's i played.
Is there a good beginners guide?

Dont have a link to a guide handy, but i do have a couple quick tips.

At level 15 the game offers a few short in-world tutorials about some aspects of combat and grouping - IF you know where to look for it. And you do know, as im telling you. Go to the inn in your home city(looks like that is probly The Quicksand in Ul'Dah for you). Standing near the proprietor of the inn will be an NPC named "The Smith". Talk to him, and he will offer to sign you up for training sessions with the Hall of the Novice. This is a short series of solo instances tailored to your class/role that give some useful pointers. Likely a lot of stuff you could guess having come from other MMOs, but the reward for completing the training sessions is a nice set of armor that will last you a good 10-15 levels. And since the training is tailored to what you play, if you switch jobs you can do their version of the training too(for their version of the armor as well - the only piece you only get once is the ring and any class can wear that).

One of the uncommon features of this game(compared to others) is that they really tried to let you do everything on one character without needing to make an army of alts. Once you complete(if you havent already) your level 10 class quest you unlock the ability to begin training in other classes and jobs. That means crafters, gatherers, and any other combat role you want to try out. Every class plays a little differently, even across the same role(summoners and black mages are both magical ranged DPS classes but they sure dont play the same) so if something looks interesting you should try it out and see for yourself.

And finally(for now, i might think of more later), one super important thing to know. While this game has a mostly open world, a ton of the content you eventually get to experience is locked and/or hidden until you do the quest to unlock it. Many quests have a + symbol as part of their icon - this denotes a quest that unlocks something(an optional dungeon, the ability to dye your clothes, new combat abilities, and a whole lot more) or in some cases leads to a quest that does. However the biggest driver to unlocking the world are the main storyline quests. Those are the ones with the comet icon symbol. The MSQ will take you all over the world, into several dungeons and dangerous fights with all manner of beast, and continues onward to this day. You want to try and keep up with it as much as you can. If you get tired of saving the world then taking a break from the quests is fine, but make sure you remember where you left off so you can get back on track when the time is right.

Oh, and this is generally a friendly community so if you have any specific questions dont hesitate to ask. Enjoy the game!

Definitely talk to him if you want that sweet gear and a very basic idea of what's expected of you in group activities. They're short and to the point and good enough to prepare you for your first dungeon.

If you want to, you can ask to be invited to the Novice Network- a special chat channel for new players and people who've been away for a while to ask experienced players questions and get advice. Any player with a crown next to their name can get you in there. You can /shout in towns for an invite too.

Thank you Hestzhyen for the feedback.

It seems that Novice Network really seems worth it.
And the community is nice and generally helps new players?

Well, your mileage may vary. For every person praising XIV's friendly community there's another one who had a terrible experience. And the Novice Network is no different. For what it's worth I think XIV has a much friendlier community than the other online games I've played over the years, but I came from a PvP background so my standards are kind of low. :P People are willing to help if you're willing to ask and put forth some effort most of the time.

I can't speak for other worlds, but the NN on Gilgamesh is kind of stagnant compared to other worlds since it's locked to newcomers but for the most part it's helpful. Mentors use it for bantz and chatting but they'll interrupt all that if a sproutling asks a question. And unless you ask something truly obscure most of the time you'll get a satisfactory reply.
