Can't raise Chocobo Level past ten??

So my chocobo needs to be fed a Thavnairian Onion in order to break the level cap... however apparently I can only do this if my Chocobo is stabled in a Fc stable. Which leads to a problem, my FC doesn't own housing.
I have an apartment in Lily Hills and tried stabling my Chocobo there but when I select feed it says I have no feed in my inventory despite having the afore mentioned onion. Am I now not able to further level my Chocobo with fc housing or am I missing something?

You don't need to have it stabled to feed it a Thavnairian Onion. You just click on the Onion while having your chocobo summoned.

But only as they cap. So don't use more than 1 onion at a time. Using 10 onions all at once wont unlock all 10 levels, it will only waste 9 onions.

And, iirc, you can get 2-3 free Thav Onions from HW Ishgard sidequests.

Remember to level up the chocobo BEFORE feeding it the onion. A chocobo CANNOT level while it's stabled. Once it hits the EXP cap (in a stable), you still need to take it out, summon it, then kill something close to your level for the chocobo to level up BEFORE feeding it the onion.

If in doubt, kill something within 10 levels of your current job with the chocobo out, check the Chocobo's exp. If it gained 0 exp, safe to feed onion.
