Best way to use it is to overheat through spread shot (have fun with that) and continue doing so and flamethrower when you have a second remaining on overheat. The damage is apparently snap shotted but I haven't tested it out for myself.

Yup, it can be easily seen on a dummy. Basically overheat, rapid fire + reload and spread shot spam, then flamethrower right before the end of oh.
