Crackpot theory:
The WoL ends up becoming a newly appointed general for Doma (presumably because of lack of viable candidates compared to Ala Mhigo). The justification for this is obvious - though if you're at max GC rank, your GC squadron gets mentioned. It's not just a simple formality though, what with the whole 'being an outsider who didn't suffer oppression alongside us' thing. Plus, you suddenly no longer have plausible deniability as an adventurer that just gets roped into doing things for the people you see the most, which means Garlemald starts financing operations to target you and your new army directly.
The Warrior of Light, now that they have some breathing space, reflects on the self centered interests that caused them to flee to Ishgard and resulted in the loss of comrades - and decides the the scales haven't been properly balanced in regard to that.
So, instead of nodding all the time, the Warrior embarks on a path to deter any possible future repeat of those self oriented interests by the relevant people and their lackeys.
After all we are a Warrior, and light does cast shadows.
I like that 4.0 did not leave many loose ends, like 3.0 (Estinien possessed) and 2.0 (the whole ARR is a convoluted mess of plotline arcs). We can't say for sure we will be treated to the rebuilding of or Garlean retaliation against AM/Doma. We were not treated to any cutscenes foreshadowing either.
The more obvious story developments would involve the
i) two island survivors,
ii) imprisoned traitor, and
iii) Garlemald, though it is not foreshadowed they intent to retaliate.

re iii) there was that cutscene with the Garlemald head honcho and you know who, with a couple of teasing lines in there. Fully expect the men in black (+ white) to play a larger part in the next stages.
Help Magna(or whatever his name is) finds his moon.

They seemed to imply that Krile almost immediately went out on a "survey" following Ala Mhigo's liberation.
I'm assuming it has to do with the Isle of Val, since they mentioned we'd be learning more about what happened to it in the 4.x cycle, and I'd be kind of surprised if we didn't get involved somehow (Going on an extra-dimensional journey to wherever exactly it was the Ascians took it is my guess).
It's also been a long while since they've shed much light on the scheming of the black-coated Ascians, so I'm expecting them to play a significant role in the 4.x cycle, too, since they've pretty much been out of the picture since the conclusion of 3.0.
I was just thinking - what became of Minfilia? There's been no word or mention of her since the ending of 2.55 (unless I missed something towards the end of HW).
