I imagine there is more to it than that. People tend to exaggerate the circumstances of things to make them self look in the right. Thats human nature. I never take either sides account as total truth. If a BLM is doing mostly Thunder spells, with an occasional low potency nuke, that run is going to take longer than an extra 2-3 minutes. The BLM in question was asked why they were playing the way they did and basically told the party to buzz off. They were underperforming and didn't care. In my book, I'd call that getting carried.

Oh my sweet summer child.
Wait til you get to cap and have to farm experts for tomes.

No new player is going to look at BLM and think 'Oh, I should be using lots of thunder magic, along with Scathe and Drain!'. They're either going to be stumbling along with mp management by overcasting Fire spells and being stuck waiting on a mana tick after Transposing, or convincing themselves that only using ice magic is better because they won't run out of mp.
Nobody is going to spam thunder magic out of ignorance, and I'm surprised you're trying to defend that sort of behaviour.

Who is defending it I am simply saying there is no way to verify that the guy never casted any other spell. Or whether this guy is being completely honest about his story of this person. And if the group never wiped because of it. It simply doesn't matter anyway. DO you know every single spell that every single member in an 8 man group casts. Or even a 4 man. Are you that aware of what every single person is doing every single second. I doubt it.

I would agree this is obnoxious and deserves a kick.If a BLM is doing mostly Thunder spells, with an occasional low potency nuke, that run is going to take longer than an extra 2-3 minutes. See, here is where your argument doesn't fit my situation at all. This Black Mage was not new. He was level 70 running relevant endgame content. You don't get to that level not knowing what the core mechanics of your job are, even if you just spam Palace of the Dead from 1-70. When you willingly play counter intuitive to how the job is supposed to work, you make it that much harder on everyone else in the group. Had the Blm said something along the lines of not knowing exactly what he was doing, my party would have given him a crash course on how it's supposed to work. But well, you know how he responded. It had nothing to do with how long the dungeon would take- rather that we may as well have had only one dps to begin with, and we kicked him because a bad dps is one thing, but a bad dps with a shitty attitude is out of the question.
As a Member of Lev's group running with him, and as a Former BLM I can verify his original statement. Yes the BLM did not cast a fire or an ice spell, which are the main damage output for BLM! If you are going to run a dungeon as any class and sit there actually doing the bare minimum on purpose for no actual reason then yea, I'm gonna kick you. If the BLM would have said flat out I want to see if this is possible, or if he had an actual reason, I would have been fine with it. But because he refused to actually give a reason and didn't want to play the class as designed I agreed to the kick. Does that make me rude? If you think so sure, but it also makes the BLM just as rude for wasting our time
Did you wipe..If not..You where completelly wrong IMO.Not a chance I am going to see your cause for ruining somebodies enjoyment of the game when it was not personally harming you in any way. I would never vote for it. Not a chance. Sound sot me like you guys where harrasing him actually.
This is an indefensible point. You say you have to respect everyones preferred gameplay method but then tell other people who don't share your opinion that they are wrong.Did you wipe..If not..You where completelly wrong IMO.Not a chance I am going to see your cause for ruining somebodies enjoyment of the game when it was not personally harming you in any way. We have opinions and preferences as well and they are not automatically wrong. In the end majority rules, that BLM got kicked (as he should have been) and people who play that way will continie to get kicked (as they should if they dont respond to friendly advice) so you are on the losing side here.

Ok, what about everyone else's enjoyment? GMs say "Playstyle Differences" and won't intervene. Not wiping isn't the only thing that matters. Most people don't want that. I'll be blunt here, with your attitude, expect to be kicked from many more groups. If someone initiates a VK because of one wipe, I won't accept the vote. But toxic attitude, refusal to improval (not to be confused with inability to improve), etc, I will kick for. The BLM being snarky when asked about it and refusing to improve or even listen to the advise, yeah I'd kick for that. I'll understand if you're struggling and I'll always try to advise first, but if you get nasty with me over it, I have no regrets kicking. It's group play, everyone's needs are treated equally (except in mitigating circumstances such as you're new, you have a disability, etc). Pulling the "my sub my way" card, when everyone else disagrees in the group, that's a valid "playstyle difference" kick.
White Mage ~ Scholar ~ PaladinBoi if you got kicked for the same thing in over 20 duties I strongly suggest you think hard on whatever the hell it is you're doing
As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.
