Question on macros and ogc skills

How much of a performance loss is if I macroed my off global cooldown skills (like assassinate, mug, etc) into my spammable buttons for melee dps jobs?

Sorry if this is a dumb question or something, but I can actually run okay with it, because those skills will fire whenever they are ready, reducing the number of short cooldowns I have to keep my eye on.

Then, I'm asking this because I'd love to know how better you'll get if you weave them between your combo sequences manually.

If it's in a macro you can't weave it. You'll have to wait for your gcd skill to finish before being able to start a macro. So putting ogcd skills on a macro is pretty much useless, as you lose their ability to be weaved between gcd skills without losing time.

    No.

Simply, they won't queue. Meaning they won't trigger themselves once ready after the current animation lock (being GCD or oGCD) ends. I'm using a lot of macro for healing purpose with mouse-over commands, on GCD or oGCD, and they work. Simple you must press at the right moment or spam it, to get the effect triggering right on time.

I've tried to macro assassination with my 1 combo button, and it's always triggered whenever it's ready, because I keep pressing 1 until the global cooldown of what I previously used ends and it fires, so the assassination skill will come out in that meantime, if it's ready to use.

What I mean is, yes I get those skills out whenever they are ready because I keep spamming the buttons during the global cooldown - I realize that with macros is impossible to perfectly weave in ogcds into your rotation, you have to do manually.

Don't macro oGCDs with GCDs. You can have a seperate oGCD spammer if you really need to but you lose control on what you're using and when with all the abilities under the same button/macro.

you mean, macroing all oGCDs into one button just for that purpose?

Never thought of it... I'm talking about just damage oriented oGCDs (ninja in my case)

edit: to clear up, I'm playing on a gamepad and less buttons=better for me, that's why I'm curious about performance and this matter.

Well, I mean, put anything you want in the macro. Just don't mix GCDs in there because you want to have your GCDs queuing naturally for dps.

It actually depends on the kind of macro. If it is a simple "/action" macro then yes your DPS could suffer as explained by the posters above. On the other hand, using a substitution macro, one that uses "/crosshotbar" or "/hotbar", can remove GCD delays at the cost of more complexity and less flexibility. It really depends on what you want to happen.

For example, as a bard, I have Pallisade and Nature's Minnie as simple "/action" macros because I cannot use a target placeholder (<tt>, <t>, etc) on substitution macros, yet I do not mind the potential DPS loss because using either as a normal skill will cause a DPS loss for me anyway, and in my opinion the miniscule loss in DPS is offset by the help the tank and healers receive from me.

On the other hand (and I think a lot of bards will lift their eyebrows at this) I have a substitution macro for Straight Shot; this produces no discernable GCD delay for me, yet it sounds an alarm when I have around six seconds left for the buff, so I can just forget about it the rest of the time...unless I use either my Pallisade or Nature's Minnie macro, both of which also make an alarm and force-resets my Straight Shot macro, informing me I have to look closer at my Straight Shot buff from theron.

I used to use skills like invigorate, mantra, second wind on the same key and spam it when I died and was resed... just to get my hp and to back up as fast as possible after being dead... but I also had the non macro versions for non recovery times
