I assume you mean in regards to being out and about in the world. Most of the time the easiest way is if they are doing custom emotes (/em) or talking about something about the game but in a more life like term (such as instead of saying DPS they might say something among the lines of 'X persons was hitting harder than they should' or something like that.. Another way is if they are using emoji's I think is the best way to say it. The only other thing other than the RP tag and use of brackets is if they are using quotation marks when they talk which for most RP'ers is a way of showing that their character is talking.
In regards to dungeons, most RPers don't RP in dungeons unless it is with other RPers. Most of them should be respectful and stop if you ask them but you may run into those who 'play the way they want' and will just make it worse (which by all means kick them cause I would). Good amount of people who RP though have a good understanding of when it is and isn't acceptable.
Incorrect.I consider people spamming my chatlog with unwanted walls of text as harassment, so yes I would consider public RP'ing to be against the ToS if we're going to be technical about it. When spambots do the exact same thing, it's against the rules, and this is no different. It's not "don't do what I don't like", since you're perfectly free to RP in private/designated places/channels and I don't mind at all. It's "don't be rude and force me to see what you are doing when I don't want to see it." It's called respecting others.
Spambots are telling you to go to some third party thing over and over and over again.
I think if so and so reported someone for roleplaying harmlessly in public to the GM's they would laugh and cry
for humanity.

No but you do walk down a busy street passing by people who would be having conversations that can be heard if they are in earshot. My main gripe with RP, especially on a server that is now getting flooded with it, is people doing it in public channels. RP in your own homes, RP in LS's or FC chat or parties, but don't do it in /say in public areas filled with people. Like, I don't want to have my chatlog filled with your bad fanfic dialog while I'm trying to go about my business in town. I blacklist anyone one who uses /say for RP purposes around me, because it is unbelievably rude and obnoxious, even moreso than the RMT spambots.
You wouldn't walk down a busy street shouting some random story right in the ears of everyone around you in real life, and you shouldn't do it the game either.
My view is that as long as it's hurting no one and if erp doesn't involve minors (fictitious or real) then it's fine.
As long as it's done in private, right...?![]()
eck
People role-playing doesn't bother me. The only place it would bother me would be in duties if it was actively hindering progression. But if people want to role-play (tastefully) in public, I don't care. I generally have /say and /shout filtered out of my usual chat log I use anyways. People can ERP too if they like, but I would prefer it remain in private and behind closed doors, just like real life intimacy. I certainly don't judge others for engaging in activities they find enjoyable in a game that they pay to play. I've done some light role-playing in the past myself, so it would be hypocritical of me to judge others for it!

I don't mind people rping, and as long as they're being respectful to others I'm not going to try to stop them. We all play to have fun right?
I USED to RP, both within FFXIV and outside, but the whole thing started to degrade into something uncomfortable and manipulative. I recall the old term was called "God-modding," essentially overpowering story threads and characters and forcing the entire thing to a certain direction without initial discussion or planning. It ain't fun, and for some reason I kept getting into sets where either I was being modded or was given way, way too much say, and I was basically writing the whole thing.
BUT. I don't really care if others RP, and I left the major RP servers since it stopped being a fun task for me. RP should be private, ERP especially, and I find it annoying, too, to see a wall of say text in a public of players RPing, but I don't think it's report worthy unless inappropriate.
I like roleplayers. I love how active the Balmung community is because of them doing events and stuff. I'm not a roleplayer myself but I write stuff about my characters and I appreciate what some people have done with theirs.
As for ERP, I don't really care as long as people keep it to themselves. Some E/RPers however take RP so personally, not separating RP from reality and that has caused countless drama.
