this coming from the person who has not leveled past 25?Actually, I do have to agree with the original poster. Patch 1.20 ruined melee combat. It's slow with no active abilities at the beginning of combat to lead with. You do nothing but watch your auto-attack and wait.
And, yes, 10 seconds during MMO combat feels like an eternity. If I (CNJ) duo with my husband (PGL), he tells me he can get in one attack (TP abilitiy) during the whole fight. The rest is just helplessly watching your auto-attack. Combat is now atrocious and no fun. And it's definitely a deciding factor not to subscribe on Jan 6th.
Games like Aion and SW:TOR have the funnest combat I've ever experienced in an MMO. This is just terrible.

Actually, the fact that I'm still mid level gives merit to my opinion. How many new people that start this game will have patience with this combat system before they shake their heads and walk away?
I've been playing since closed beta. Just because I can't force myself to play through an empty game with no leveling content to get to 50...
Besides, classic troll response (I don't know how to logically dispute your opinion, so I'll just insult you...)

I thought it was because you dont level without your hubby which is pretty silly IMO. Kinda hard to take anything you say seriously when you haven't progressed far enough to really judge most of these systems.Actually, the fact that I'm still mid level gives merit to my opinion. It is. He hates combat now and refuses to play because of it. Which means, I won't be playing.
That doesn't mean I don't share his opinion. I'm just lucky enough to only play casters. I agree, 1.20 ruined melee combat.
It's not silly. MMOs are how we spend time together. We do all our quests, all our dungeons, all our raids, all our firsts together. In every MMO you see in my signature (with the exception of FFXI, which he couldn't stand), that's how we played, all the way to cap.
The family that plays together, stays together.
Level 25. In a game where cap is 50, that's mid-level. That's plenty of time to make an informed decision about whether or not combat feels right. If you're still banging your head against the keyboard past mid-level, it's time to admit that there's a problem. Either with the game, or it's just not right for you. Either way, it's another lost player (in this case, two).
How long do you expect new players to keep muddling through before they start enjoying their class? 30? 40? 50?

Currently to be level 50 you need 1,750,000 exp, or there abouts.
To be level 25 you need to have acheived 240,000 exp, or there abouts. You are not even over 1/7th of the way through your class, yet you claim to be halfway.
Level 40 is roughly about halfway, at 900,000 exp.
That's when you have the majority of abilites, hopefully some cross class abilities such as invigorate for increased TP gain, and start doing strongholds where stuff get's pretty fun.
I hope you stick around to see the halfway mark.

Imho getting from 1 to 40 is way harder than from 40 to 50 <.<
pure exp isnt really a good measure of the halfway mark in this game for a number of reasons25 is not half way, experience wise.

1. your base exp for fighting monsters changes with your level
2. your maximum exp gain from fighting monsters of higher level changes with your level.
3. the battle system is currently designed around having most of your skills, ie you are WAAY more effective at fighting when you are 35+
4. in general you wont find as many parties till you reach 20+
5. you dont have much access to cross class skills initially (both from in game limits, and if it is your first times playing simply not having that many other jobs leveled)
6. your ability to effectively handle and kill links also changes with your level.
this comes together to form, low levels being in fact a lot slower than one would guess by looking at the total exp, most people will have an easier time getting from 35-50 than they did getting from 1-35. and i think it will actually be a lot more enjoyable post 35, that is a problem, the game needs new players to succeed. It needs to have more in place. The process of exploration and getting to the destination needs to be more fun.
why play a game that makes the process of 1-35 not fun, and leaves you with only two things to do at 50? its a bad equation.

Well if you're nuking lv 25 mobs on your CNJ, I wouldn't be surprised if your PGL husband had issues getting hits in. Bravo, however, for basing your criticism of the game's battle system off of such a trivial encounter.Actually, I do have to agree with the original poster. Patch 1.20 ruined melee combat. I for one have all battle classes at 50. I've tried them all since patch - both solo on GC leves as well as in party. I love the current battle system, despite it being still incomplete. Once Jobs come in with 1.21 we will have taken the 2nd biggest step to fixing the battle system as a whole.
