In addition to the level 50 gear(ironworks mentioned above), items for several quests, some crafting mats, and a handful of other "assorted" things, theres one more key usage for poetics these days. You can also use them to buy some level 60 gear(and upgrades). So when you're starting to get close to 60 putting some tomes down on a few pieces of Shire gear(ilvl 260) just like you did for the Ironworks stuff 10 levels earlier is a good idea.
