I'm a level 14 miner.
Today i went to Camp Skull Valley to mine some iron ore from grade 2 deposits, and my "Remainder" bar was less than half of its length when i started.I could only hit the exposed rock twice

Did this happen every time, or only some times?
If it did, did anything show up as being "damaged" when you failed? In my experience post-patch, when I have a small and/or depleting-more-than-normal remainder bar, it's because I've found a rare item like a gemstone.
Otherwise, if you're depleting a lot, ensure that ALL your gear is adding +gathering/output/perception and favors MIN/DoL, try to have +MND and +VIT items and traits, etc. You should have no problem with grade II at L14.
Hmm actually the cause could be damaged and low level gear, i'll repair it and see what happens
Hey Muscles ^^. Volt had a great summary of what you should be looking out for. For grinding purposes any optimally ranked gear that favors MIN/DoL will be good enough for you to XP on. Below are the sweetspots for Camp Skull Valley. In the off-chance that you are hitting a gemstone every time, try to set your depth to Iron Ore or Alumen for grinding purposes. Especially alumen since it can be dug with one hit. Another tip is that alumen can be found at ~50% on the mini-game. Hope this helps!
Camp Skull Valley (Sweet Spots)
-Iron Ore (-2)
-Sunrise Tellin (4)
-Alumen (-1)
-Raw Lapis Lazuli (2)
-Raw Fluorite (3)

Certain items have smaller starting remainder bars than others. Often times you can use the size of the remainder bar to know in advance what item you are about to get.
pretty much explained it, not only that, but once you know what the remainder translates to for a mining spot, it also gives you an idea of how much power to put in your strike. Once you learn, you'll hit the mark every time.
i had this when i first started mining there. it is rare items gem stones. i spoke to a experienced miner and this is the tip i got that works almost every time : when you bar is so small it is a rare item, think of your target as percentages (the round meter that you press on to strike) so the outside is 100 percent and the middle is 0percent, to mine the rare items you want to strike at about 25 percent. and the ore and alumin is at 75 percent.
i hope that is clear and you understand what i mean. once i got it i hardly ever miss anything
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember, that is the illusion.
not true about where you go for each of those items grandm.i had this when i first started mining there. it is rare items gem stones. i spoke to a experienced miner and this is the tip i got that works almost every time : when you bar is so small it is a rare item, think of your target as percentages (the round meter that you press on to strike) so the outside is 100 percent and the middle is 0percent, to mine the rare items you want to strike at about 25 percent. and the ore and alumin is at 75 percent.

check my guide with a bit more detail on where items are likely to be and what is likely to be there from the remainder bar.

Usually when I mine, if it's the Raw Gems stuff, the starting remainder bar is below half. I can't remember about Iron Ore though.
