How do you remember mechanics?

I try to watch a video if I feel that I need to refresh my memory (usually Mizzteq 'cause her puns are top kek). Either way, I still go by the guideline of "don't stand in the poop".

THere have been a few times where I've got a dungeon and thought to myself "I have no memory of this place."

Watch a video in case there's that odd mechanic that's counter intuitive to how you think it'd work (the charge from the first boss in Bardams metal still makes no sense to me.) After that, it's pretty much just go where the arrows say and stay out of the orange

How do you remember mechanics?

By dying/wiping to them. I'll often watch videos and read Wikis, but I won't remember a lot of it when I actually do them, especially when we complete the duty regardless.

As a tank I don't watch videos, that's just confusing to me. I'd much rather read what actually happens.

That way I know what effects the different attacks have, like what are the tank busters, what requires that I move the boss, what should have priority, etc.

Then it's just a question of trying once. When you've read what's supposed to happen it becomes rather easy to recognize it in game and do what needs to be done.

I wouldn't say I "remember" them, but most mechanics are "secondary" throughout the game (I assume endgame alone is different, where you can do fewer mistakes), so I remember the ones that matter, the ones that mean wiping if done wrong.

You know how it goes, when you're against a boss you've done before and you have some bad memories, but you don't know what exactly, then it does something and the whol group is left with only a few HP and then you suddenly remember, "oh right, we had to..."

I watch or read a guide, I get some practise and then i just keep banging my head against the boss until dealing with the mechanics practically becomes muscle memory.

This is easier than you might think. It's basically always front and back. Or left and right. It's never front and left or back and left for example. So you can simplify it by if it's "fore" get beside it. If it's not then get behind it. And you'll ace it every time.

Oh, I know it's always front/back or sides are safe. I'm just being a bit slow at linking the cast to the direction. I know fore/aft is front/back.. but for whatevet reason, I've been thinking that means to get to its back. :v And then my mind blanks on ster (lack of familiarity with nautical terms as mentioned by Avatre).

I'm a slow learner. I suck, I die, I look like a fool. But after a few runs, it's engraved in my (muscle) memory forever. That is, until I run that instance on a different role...

Failure is the best teacher, as they say. And that rings true for me. I don't remember mechanics of any fight until I die to them enough times for it to finally click. And that is usually a substantial amount lol

Guides and Practice. And it might sound funny but picking up relics does do a good job as well, or at least back in ARR. After you've ran 350 times coppermine HM you will remember every damn mechanic in that dungeon. People could actually wake you at night and ask you about the boss mechanics, and you could repeat them without even having to think about. Same for the old trials, how to skip and how to deal with mechanics that are not skip able etc. Do that with every ARR trial and dungeon, you'll have remembered it all.

This now works for the HW dungeons as well, clearly it's a bit different concept but again it's practice. SB for example how I started remembering the mechanics for trials, I queue'd for 2 hours straight only into the SB trials. Memorized and practiced the phases, the error's etc. Hell I even spend 4 hours a day for a whole week, in the last trial of the MSQ, not because I needed to clear it still, because I needed other people to screw up, so that when playing a healer, I could see what's going on, how to avoid these mechanics, how to shield/heal/protect players better, when to heal, when to dps etc.

Then went on to dungeons, I picked 2 dungeons out of the SB content, and ran that for hours again same thing here, remembering for myself mechanics but also getting a good insight of other player errors that might have been avoided by themselves, or prevented by me with having to plan out my healing etc a bit more. Then I level'd a tank and a dps, getting some insight of specific content on different jobs is a absolute eye opener and in my opinion important.

In all it's just practice, some learn faster then others, and then there are people like me that just try to perfect everything. It can be a nightmare in any instance, because over archiving is sometimes not a good thing either.
