Has Any Damage Dealing Job Surprised You?

    Hi everyone!

Has there been a damage dealing job that you thought you'd hate but it turned out that you liked it instead?

For me, it is Lancer/Dragoon. I looked at the class originally and thought what was the point.(heh) A class defined by jumps and looked down upon by the community for their tendency to die quickly. Bleah, right?

Well, I had to play one back when we had subclasses, and I LOVED it. The abilities, the story, and that feeling that you were barely in control all hooked me. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up leveling both Monk and Dragoon.

So what was it for you?

Well I started out as a tank. Had dreams of being the next unbreakable, unstoppable dwarf (lalafell) warrior. Ended up hating tanking. Was just pressing combos and overpower over and over, even in 50+ dungeons.

Tried out summoner, stayed till 30. Realized I was having way more fun than I ever did as a tank. Tried out the scholar side and found healing was more fun than on WHM. So I became a summoner main/scholar secondary.

Warrior is still gathering dust in the 50's or something, don't remember

    Summoner did.

I'd tried Arcanist as one of my first jobs on one of my first characters back at launch (back when I was an altaholic and the servers were constantly being closed to character creation and I hadn't settled on a race so I was jumping about to different servers). Thought it was neat but it didn't really click with me, despite having been a Warlock main in WoW for years and thinking dots+pet would be right up my alley.

Started leveling it on my previous main Nyketa Valren (same as my current server) and while I got it to level 43 something about it never clicked and so I figured I just didn't like it.

Eventually started this character, and had leveled it to 15 and it sat for a while...got bored and started leveling it again but something still didn't feel right...

Until I saw some comment about rotations and Fester and Bane, and how there's almost a rhythm to when those would fit in between Ruins and refreshing DoTs, and it was like a lightbulb went off in my head. As obvious as those mechanics really are, I'd never thought about how those two abilities fit in with everything else (I'd treated them as "use in certain scenarios only" abilities), and suddenly the job made sense. Once that particular bit of knowledge was in place, I found it to be a lot more fun.

Not a DPS job, but AST was that pleasant surprise for me. At first i was "what a stupid idea" but suddenly found myself using it as main healer job.

HW BRD was great imo. And NIN since HW thanks to Armor Crush and improved servers. In 2.0 I didn't like melee at all.

In ARR I liked the style of NIN but couldn't get a hang on the whole DoT management and ninjutsus, after trying and trying i couldn't get it and started to hate it and abandoned NIN.

Now with the SB changes and the simplification of the buff/debuff/DoT management it is my most favorite DPS job.

Bard because how much stuff it got. Just so many support buffs on top of having a very nice rapid dps rotation. That job redesign is a big winner.

It was DRG for me during Heavensward, especially when I got Geirskogul. I love fast paced melee classes and while DRG had the slowest GCD of all melee jobs it had plenty of oGCDs to use which made it feel so fluid for me and loved the class to death.

I'm still a bit bummed how they changed it so far in SB, but perhaps when I get to 68 (when I finally get Mirage Dive) and above it will be more fun. I'm still hoping they'll at least reduce the Geirskogul Cd to 20s at some point, to get the feeling of HW's DRG back a bit. But as I said, perhaps Mirage Dive will scratch that itch when I get there.

RDM. From the early previews I was a little disappointed that it looked like 90% casting and 10% melee attacks (instead of something like 50/50), but its grown on me and with manafication and enchanted moulinet spam in dungeons I'm getting to melee more than I thought.

Also ridiculously easy to play for the amount of damage it does and especially overpowered in low level dungeons, what's not to like? I played machinist in Heavensward and RDM is literally a better machinist in almost every way.

    1. The same direct damage-no dots gameplay except you actually do damage
    2. Did I mention you actually do damage?
    3. Similar level of mobility to HW machinist, similar proc based system
    4. Contre Sixte is literally a better ricochet that has only 3/4s the cooldown
    5. Fleche is literally a gauss round that hits twice as hard
    6. Just as invaluable during progression for the utility they bring
