I think you need a special dongle for some wireless controllers. You can get 9/10 different controllers to work. Xbox controllers are the best supported for any game though if you play more than this game since it's the microsoft brand.

Thank you for the replies. Might give building one a try.

for a year, would you rather be secretly filmed at random moments and have the footage uploaded to your social media or loose $100 when ever you said a curse word?

I would just recommend looking at http://www.xoticpc.com before going the BYO route, as they build primarily gaming systems and gaming laptops. Don't buy anything you can pickup at bestbuy or Amazon if you want to play games, as the build quality is terrible on anything less than 1000$, and I would actually suggest getting at least a nVidia 1070 GTX if you want to keep it for a few years.

Are three good choices if you're looking to go the pre/custom build route. Alienware probably being one of the better choices for being on a budget from their student deals. While Falcon and Xidax are there if you want to go all out.

Is it just a matter of getting the right driver, and having the cords/controller?

Edit: The controller wouldn't just be for FFXIV, but for some other games as well that are capable of being played with one.
I dunno about getting a PS4 controller to work on PC. I have an Xbox One wired controller on mine, no set up required, it was just plug and play.

Laptop or desktop? A lot of times you can get a much better rig for a lower price if you want a desktop machine. I usually shop at NewEgg they have great deals like this one. https://www.newegg.com/Special/Shell...292017&Index=6

It's really a matter of knowing what you want. I would look for I7 at least 8 gigs of ram and an nvidia geforce gtx 960 or higher video card (I don't know the radeon equivalent because I only buy geforce). If you want this computer to last you a while get the best video card you can right now.

Also make sure the brand of computer you get is good. Asus, Lenovo, Alienware, etc. Do your research before buying! Ask around and read reviews of products. I've helped many of my friends/family pick their machines and so far no one's been unhappy.

People also forget mobile GPUs are a generation or two behind the desktop models. A Nvidia laptop 1080 is about the same as a desktop 880, check the processing chores and threads.

I'm running a Ryzen 5 1500X, 8GB and GTX1060 6GB and running the game around 70-120 FPS depending on area and population.
My rig cost me USD1150 but keep in my we have high taxes for electronics in Sweden so its probabaly not as much if you buy said parts in the US
