I wouldn't exactly call my group "the most cut throat progression meta" and I just got asked to go PLD instead of WAR for a specific fight.
The problem is, we only have 2 tank slots in your average 8-man party, so no matter what the meta is, one of the three tanks is going to be the unwanted stepchild.
And this is why we can't have nice things. No they shouldn't get needed, the other tanks should get more utility.
As a PLD player since beta (well since launch) who's now again leveling the PLD on my new character, I don't mind one single bit if the PLD had no utility at all.
In fact, I think all utility skills/spells should be put into Role Actions. Let each player choose themselves how much utility they want to bring. Let top raiders also play the jobs they love while still have a perfectly orchestrated spread of utility.
Then throw a few skills for the solo player, self-heals and damage increases etc.
Why can't WAR and DRK also have Cover? I mean they're tanks, right?
Of course those skills tied to lore would need to be re-written, but imagine when raiding isn't about learning the meta job each patch, but about playing the job you love yet still bring to the table exactly what the raid needed.
EDIT: But we all know it's not going to happen, since FFXIV does value its differences between jobs, and I don't mind that either.

Yeah, it just sucks that it's mine this time around I guess.
I don't think it should be so bad that I can't justify to the raid leader why I shouldn't get to play warrior instead.
Be realistic.... the only utility drk and war want to cancel from paladin is block now been able to mitigate both type of damage...all utilities drk and war lost are debuff that are related to a damage skill. Now all tanks lost utilities from damage skills, then suddenly pld became from useless to optimal....
I know right? Cant wait for 5.0 DRK to finally get jacked enough that we hear "nerf DRK". Beginning to look like every expansion they pick a new healer/tank to outshine the others. It would be the most boring job in the game with a simple rotation and simple buffs—these things work well with situational utility, and it would just be extremely dull without. I would stop playing PLD and heal or DPS.
