Check for a gear set. If one isn't available, put on the gear that the recommendations window would display. If the weapon/gear is in the retainer and the duty had popped, you wouldn't be able to grab it out of the retainer (I've tried, once that duty ready window appears you can't move/sell gear around retainers, it errors out), so you'd have to abandon the queue or hope someone declines to get it out anyway. The systems are already in place (bar the abort cutscene option), all that remains is to program some automation into them for this scenario. Sure, FFXIV's spaghetti code may make it more difficult, but I don't think it'd be too difficult to implement, using my rudimentary knowledge of programming to consider it all.

For me, it was a case of you'd spelled it out pretty clearly and with a suggestion on how to handle it so the others don't have to wait. Your suggestion is a fair compromise tbh. Another option could be go in as normal, after the duty, it either continues the cutscene from where you were up to, or brings up a popup asking you if you want to rewatch the cutscene. There's so many ways it could be done.
