What is Teledji Adeldji a Prince of?

    Hello,

I finally found the time to read my lorebook and stumble over something that seemed "weird" to me.
For everyone who has the lorebook (the rest will have to believe me): On page 132 is a list of all the Syndicate members, each one with a certain title.
Teledji Adeldjis title is "Prince", however the later character-box mentions nothing about him being related to the royal line ("born to a Plainsfolk father from Limsa Lominsa and a wealthy Dunesfolk mother from Ul'dah").
Is "wealthy" already implying that his mother was royal in some sense?
Or is "Prince" simply the title he gave himself as owner of his company (as in: is it not an actual royal title but more similar to how Godbert is called President)?

Just a self-aggrandizing Ul'dahn title, I think. See "Lord" Lolorito (and "Lord" Manderville).

Teledji is what one might call a merchant prince, after all.

It is entirely possible that Teledji is a distant relation to the Sultana herself and so is bequeathed the title of Prince simply by hereditary right.

Also, Plainsfolk in this sentence is a race and not indicative of wealth or status. So his father may have been a rich spice merchant from Limsa Lominsa and his mother a noblewoman that was part of a clan that was close to the Royal Family.

    Being dead.

All jokes aside, yeah, he's probably a "merchant prince".

    He finally got a palace tho... of the dead. ;;;
I love that problematic dead spud. I did a lot of research on him before the lore book came out. Alas very little that I could dig out.
Part of me wishes to think he was in fact of Sil'dih descend and wanted some kind of revenge on the Ul'dah bloodline... ... but nah, he was, as stated above, self proclaimed prince (charming in 1.0) and Lolorito's rival for a short while until Raubahn decided to cut the expenses.

Given the mentions of "House Manderville" in the game, I would not be surprised if the Mandervilles are officially nobility in Ul'dah.

I would also not be surprised if this is because they bought their noble title (or were awarded it for their wealth), and that this is the accepted and preferred way of becoming nobility in Ul'dah.

Maybe "Lord Lolorito" is the same case. "Prince Teledji" might be a bit too pompous, though.

I have both lore books so I remembered this thread and consulted both.

In English, he is styled "Prince Teledji Adeledji, Mirage Trust". In Japanese, he is "Mirage Trust Chief: Teledji Adeledji". No royal connotations whatsoever; it's a conceit of the English version to add some flavour.

The state of 'nobility' in Ul'Dah outside of the Royal Family is somewhat nebulous especially when compared to the purely hereditary line seen in Ishgard. If I had to hazard a guess it would be that titles of Nobility were hereditary at one point, but have since succumbed to the plutocratic nature of modern Ul'Dahn society. Various characters are referred to as Nobles such as Lolorito and even Godbert. That being said, chances are it's just a self-proclaimed title. Teledji Adeledji is notoriously arrogant and greedy for power, something which led him to being easily manipulated by Lolorito. It only makes sense that he'd give himself a grander title.

It's not unheard of for noble titles to be purchased even in established peerages. The English and Scottish dabbled in it but the French really went all in - legally you could buy up some penniless noble's land and providing you paid an extortionate amount of special taxes and didn't act too common the King would ennoble you via Letters Patent.

That really seems like something Ul Dah would do, too.
