Talent Trees are horrible. The Merit system was a lot better. It is too soon though. Perhaps one day, but not now.

What... exactly was the difference between the two except that one made you grind more? (That being FFXI merit system)

the 2 have nothing in common at all

1 lets you add points and abilities when AT CAP LEVEL(doesnt change how you play, just makes you stronger without leveling)

the other lets you specialize in what your abilities will be AS YOU LEVEL(basicaly, it determines what your job is able to do)

Merits start at 75 and 99 is now the cap. So, what is the difference again?

the real diff is point alotment is just that...stat points.

Merits gave you whole other things to do, beef up your abilities, unlock new abilities, etc.

merits were meant to be for a capped game is what the difference is

just because half a decade later the game raises the cap, doesnt mean that all of a sudden thats what the system was originaly meant for

facts are facts, and fact is, the merit system in 11 was meant for a capped game

and in the end as some pointed out above, it was about raising your stats past the max allowed for capped character(and also enhanced your non capped ones at the same time to help you level them easier since you already capped one, which in that game was a pretty big feat back in the day).

remember, you cant always compare content now to content 5 years ago for a game
game content and different things are released for a game as is, they dont release something now for a game 5 years down the line. at most they plan up to a year ahead for expansions(and even then usualy not that far)

so yeah, merits have nothing to do with a 75-99 game, they were meant for a 75 cap game, now that the cap has been raised, it doesnt apply to that specific instance anymore(the cap raising one that is)

they were still meant for a capped game

To further elaborate (read: I just like watching myself type) in FFXI the merit system worked something like this:

Want to increase your Dex by 1 point? That'll be 10,000 exp points.
Want to increase your Dex by another point? That'll be 20,000 exp points.
    Etc.

Want to increase your Evasion rate? That'll be 10,000 exp points.
    And so forth.

It was used to basically enhance the skills that you currently had as opposed to gain, new specialized ones.

Talent/Skill trees are done through grinding as well, that's the only thing in common. The difference is:

    1. Talent Trees are your skills and spells in general.
    2. Merit system is additional progression, not main progression, as in you can go forever without unlocking or upgrading what they offer, they sure do help, but they aren't required in your level progression since you don't even get to touch it till end-game.
    3. Talent Trees are from the start because it allows you to basically customize your route outside of the general "required skills".
