I liked the story a lot--sorry you feel this way.
I was surprised to actually take down Zenos in the end, but am now excited to see how the subsequent patches are going to go. Our seemingly greatest foe of this expansion has already been destroyed--so now I wonder if there will be a Nidhogg-esque situation where he comes back like forty times. Remember, the first time we "killed" that ass of a dragon was in the Aery.
I thought the voice acting was phenomenal, the dialogue perhaps a bit corny at times, but whatever. I'm a sucker for theatrics. Only wished they could have expanded more on Azim Steppe, and hope to see more of it in the future. I'm a sucker for Xaela lore and the tribal aesthetic.
One thing that I do have a complaint about, though; during the segment right before Castrum Abania, when Alisaie fears for her brother's life? Felt like it was completely swallowed in the melodramatics of Conrad's death. Conrad who, tbh, felt like he was made for this expansion, to die in this expansion. And honestly, wasn't he the only major death of a character (on OUR side) with more than twenty voice lines? Felt lame. Was disappointed to see we got teased with Gosetsu's death and he wasn't even dead. And we have to tolerate more of that witch who uses her own abuse as an excuse to kill hundreds of innocent people. Those were my only real gripes... otherwise, loved it.
My biggest gripe is how easily zenos defeated you with little effort even after all the godly beings you've fought against. How is your character who most of the time single handedly fought and defeated such foes get totally punked by some generic evil guy? I'm guessing that armor that zenos wears must be the physical form of his plot armor
I guess that there is diferent opinions on everything.
To me (And to almost everyone I play with) SB story is much better than the previous ones.
In fact, if I had to put a score, I would say that A Realm Reborn was a 3 out of 10, Heavensward 5 out of 10, and Stormblood 7/10.
For the first time in this game I have enjoyed the story.
Source that's the FF14 1.0 Release.
the guy should have kept his stock... it's worth about twice as much now.
long story short... as i mentioned in another thread... I would like to see the story moving more towards gods and mystical realm. As strong as the empire is, nation vs nation war shouldn't concern the warrior of light. that's why I kinda like HW's story better... but hey.. my friend loves SB story over HW.

@Furiea. That's the right source. I didn't post it because I'm not used to this forum (you can tell this my first post here, right?) and didn't want to post a link since some forums discourage them. I adjusted my post to be more accurate, thankfully the article wasn't the point or all this would have been pointless. I thanked Ilenya for the info.
And thank you for helping me out so much. No idea if I'll start a new thread any time soon, but I'll try to remember your advice if I do.

The story is moving in that direction though. The various wars that the WoL is getting involved with are ultimately all the result of the Ascians who appear to have very direct influence in Garlemald. If we wish to stop the Ascians and Zodiark we need to stop Garelemald first, and to stop Garlemald we needed to liberate Ala Mhigo and Doma. Yoshi has already told us that the current story arc has two expansions remaining in it, which makes it easy to see that 5.0 is the war against Garlemald and 6.0 is the battle against Zodiark.Source that's the FF14 1.0 Release.

This isn't the sort of MMO where the devs just pick a random theme for an expansion. The story, its associated geographical locations and its villains are all pre-planned years ahead. The 4.X patch cycle has a lot of potential for new mystical elements as well due to the reveal of what the Echo is truly capable of. The WoL is going to be trying to learn how to command primals now...
While I don't agree with all your points, I thought the SB story to be very lackluster as well. Granted I am not objective about this because Y'shtola is my waifu and I am utterly disgusted by the continued Shtola ryona the developers keep up, but trying to view it in an objective manner:
The story had no twists or turns. We start out liberating not one but two kingdoms and manage it with very little opposition. The Garleans felt absolutely laughable -inb4 Zeons held them back because he wanted a good fight- and the epic feeling they try to invoke in the end had no buildup at all. It felt rushed and in my eyes it would have been served better to have either Doma or Ala Mhigo being the focus. Characters were flat and had no arc except for Hien. Lyse fell completely flat and was mostly annoying in my eyes. The very interesting plot string of the WoL being somewhat like a primal seems to be completely dropped for now.
The hyped rivalry with Zenos resulted to nothing for me, he was as generic as any villan could be. Lavos from Chrono Trigger was better handled and he... it.. had no dialogue in that game. I felt a lot more connected to Grynewaht and felt compassion on how the poor dude ended up.
I actually enjoyed the ARR story more and HW was still the most interesting journey we undertook so far.

Well, that was a disaster... Sorry for all the white space. Thank you Furiea, for that advice. I'll keep it in mind if I ever post another long post.
