Two words: Synergy, and Utility. Sure, heavy healing while in progression phase is nice, but what do you think is going to happen just a month from now?
No one's going to need a "pure healer" when gear is good enough to not nearly be dead by every other AOE.
I like how people only take into consideration the present, and not the future. It's not that hard to have a little foresight with these things. Unless people still think it's fine to have a job that's only useful in the progression phase, which is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Hi, welcome to WHM, the pure healing class. We don't need utility because we can do 3x the amount of healing other healers can. If you want utility, reroll an AST. White mage is never, NEVER going to bring utility to the raid. Get over it.

The "synergy" you seek is between the two types of healers. Pure healing, and utility. THAT is synergy, not one class bringing it all to the raid.

If you don't like it, quit and roll AST.

P.S. Who cares about how useful a class is when your group has it on farm and out gears it?
