Please explain BiS stuff to me

I play a samurai, and everyone tells me there are different pieces of gear that are best in slot. I know I should go for pieces with Direct Hit and Crit, but I've crafted all my own 320 gear and penta-melded it with relevant materia - but I'm told that's still not good enough and that stuff like the Ala Migan coat is better.

    Help!

Does it look better? Pretty sure it looks better. You see, the stats dont matter to much as long as you look awesome - you probably have totally neglected that.
Keep your 230-gear but glamour the Ala Migan coat over it asap and you should be fine.

BiS is a mathematical meta designed specifically for min-maxing of stats in order to optimize the output (damage typically, but can also be healing and such) of a particular job. The issue with trying to be "BiS", though, is that it can actually be situational to the fight so one duty can have one BiS build while another can have a different BiS build. On top of this, you generally only need to be BiS for 2 things: FFLogs and Savage progression raiding. If you're not doing either of these than BiS doesn't much matter.

All of that being said, if you want to figure out your BiS you can always use the tools on http://ffxiv.ariyala.com

Its a bit more dependant on class.
For example, back when we had Parry and Accuracy, you only need, lets say, 500 accuracy to hit a boss. if you had 500 accuracy already, picking a piece of gear that had +150accuracy, or a piece of +100crit, which would you choose?

Now with the changes, the "best" stat usually isnt AS noticable, except in certain situations.

    LOL

Ultimately BiS is what you aim for as a savage raider your BiS is a mix match of the highest ilvl pieces in order to get the most out of stats so if that doesn't concern you just focus on getting the highest ilvl pieces you can.

BiS is just the gear in a particular tier that provides the most of whatever stat a particular job desires. For SAM: DH=SkS>Det>Crit.

So lets just take ilvl 320 gear for example.

If you wanted to prioritize Direct Hit you would use piece #2 as it has more DH then you could meld into #1. If you wanted to prioritize SkS you would use piece # 1 as it has more than you could meld into piece #2.

...guys, that person is a know foren-troll and I would be extremly surprised if their question was actually serious (hence my reply)

I do hope that anyone who does need advice on this matter stumbles over your helpful answers though, so they wont go to waste.

Even a forum troll trying to be trolly can ask a question which is generally useful to the community on accident. I echo the hope that, if this is indeed a troll thread, the proper answers do benefit those that actually need the advice regardless.

Well... seeing as even penta-melded 230 gear is nowhere close to 310 gear, much less 320 or 330... yeah, they are justified in telling you it's not good enough.
